The Atlantis Parliament is the constitutional body holder of the legislative function. The Parliament has a bicameral structure, and consists of two chambers having the same functions: the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
The first is made up of 7 Deputies and 4 Senators in the second to be added to the Senators of law (former President of the Republic) and the Senators for life. According to the provisions of art. 59 of the Constitution they are citizens who have honored the outstanding achievements in the social, scientific, artistic and literary, and are appointed by the president. There is a direct correlation between the number of parliamentarians and the population represented, as was the previous wording of Article. 56 and 57 of the Constitution.
Chamber of Deputies
The Chamber of Deputies (sometimes called simply Chamber) is the lower house of the Parliament, one of two parliamentary assemblies (the other is the Senate) that constitute the Atlantis Parliament.
The Chamber of Deputies was originally far less powerful than the Senate of the Republic, but today its legislative powers greatly exceed those of the Senate. Today the Senate power to reject most legislative bills was reduced to a delaying power. Moreover, the Government is primarily responsible to the Chamber of Deputies; the prime minister stays in office only as long as he or she retains its support. Almost all government ministers are drawn from the Chamber of Deputies and all prime ministers since 2011.
In accordance with art. 56 of the Constitution, the Chamber is composed of 11 members.
Member of Parliament
A Member of Parliament is a representative of the voters to the parliament. Since Atlantis have a bicameral parliament, the term applies specifically to members of the lower house, as upper houses have a different title, such as senators.
Members of parliament tend to form parliamentary groups (also called parliamentary parties) with members of the same political party. In everyday use, the term Member of Parliament is almost always shortened to the initialism "MP", and this is also common in the media.
