The Assembly of the Republic, commonly referred to as Parliament, is the unicameral parliament of the Republic of New Melanesia.
Powers and Duties of the Assembly
The Assembly of the Republic's powers derive from its ability to dismiss a government through a vote of no confidence and to change the country's laws.
The Assembly has extensive legislative powers and substantial control over the budget, the right to authorize the government to raise taxes and grant loans, the power to ratify treaties and other kinds of international agreements, and the duty to approve or reject decisions by the President of the Republic to declare war and make peace. The assembly also appoints many members of important state institutions.
Structure
The assembly is made up of elected Members of Parliament (MPs). Members are elected by proportional representation and serve for a legislative term before being dismissed. However the President of New Melanesia may dismiss parliament, ending terms early.
Seats
There are a total of 25 seats in the Assembly. For a party to gain a majority and to form government they need a minimum of 13 seats.
Presidents of the Assembly
The President of the Assembly is the presiding officer over the assembly of the republic. The assembly president acts as a speaker of the assembly and ensures order is maintained within parliamentary sessions.
