The Armed Forces of New Melanesia are the military forces of the Republic of New Melanesia. All military forces, including the Armed Forces, are under the command of the President of New Melanesia, who members swear allegiance to, and are overseen by the Ministry of Defence. The armed forces are responsible for the defence of New Melanesia and its territories and also promotes the republic's wider interests.
New Melanesia's Armed Forces are composed of the Army, Air Force and Navy. The Armed Forces include standing forces (full time soldiers), the regular reserves (full-time soldiers who transitioned to be reserve soldiers) and the volunteer reserves (volunteer part time soldiers).
History
The Armed Forces were formed on 14 July 2022, initially as the Defence Force of New Melanesia. However they later developed into the Armed Forces and split off into three branches.
Organisation and Structure
Command Organisation
As head of state, the President of New Melanesia serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The Ministry of Defence is the Government department and highest level of military headquarters charged with formulating and executing defence policy for the armed forces. The department is controlled by the minister of defence who is appointed by the President.
The chief of defence staff is the professional head of the armed forces and is an appointment that can be held by an admiral, air force general or army general. Each services has their own respective professional chiefs: the chief of the naval staff, the chief of the general staff and the chief of the air staff.
All chiefs of staff and the commander-in-chief sit on the Defence Council, the professional body under the Ministry of Defence responsible for the direct management of the armed forces.
Ministry of Defence
The Ministry of Defence maintains a number civilian agencies in support of the New Melanesian Armed Forces. Although they are civilian, they play a vital role in supporting Armed Forces operations, and in certain circumstances are under military discipline.
Recruitment
All the branches of the armed forces recruit from the population of the republic. However the Government highly promotes military service, especially while under the current national political system.
