History

Planning and Founding

Plans to create Anglestonia begun in 2015, with the earliest records being from October that year. It was initially planned to be an independent country called the "Grand Duchy and Commonwealth of Anglestonia" with the commonwealth part meaning that the Queen Elizabeth II would hold the title of Queen of Anglestonia whilst the Grand Duke would be a monarch nominally below the Queen but holding the power. This plan evolved into the establishment of a micronation called the British Empire, established on the 12th of October 2016 with the Grand Duchy of Anglestonia being one of its two initial territories, the other being the South Anglestonia Colony, which Anglestonia ruled. South Anglestonia was created so that Anglestonia would not be the only territory in the empire, and likewise, South Anglestonia was to be a temporary territory to be dissolved after this was no longer an issue.

1st war of South Anglestonian Independence

The British Empire was in the process of acquiring a new territory called the Scottish Colony, thereby making the existence of the South Anglestonia Colony redundant. For this reason, it was to be annexed into the Grand Duchy of Anglestonia on new year's day 2017. There was a war for South Anglestonian Independence on the 16th of December 2016, which the Grand Duchy of Anglestonia won. Anglestonia subsequently brought forward the annexation, having a small annexation ceremony on the 16th of December and annexing it on the 17th of December. The 16th of December marked the beginning of the South Anglestonian Republican Army (SARA), a terrorist organisation within Anglestonia. There was a second war of South Anglestonian independence on the 30th of October 2017, which the Grand Duchy won.

Expansion of Anglestonia and the diplomatic crisis between the British Empire and Jocistan

On the 26th of March 2018, Anglestonia annexed a territory called Vietgnome, an Anglestonian colony nine times larger than Anglestonia. The size of Anglestonia increased tenfold from 2 to 20 square feet, with Vietgnome becoming a county. There were now three counties: Leighfrith, Vietgnome, and South Anglestonia.

Due to the addition of a new county and the small sizes of the counties of Leighfrith and South Anglestonia (1 square foot each), on the 3rd of April 2018, these two counties were merged into a county called Leighfrith but with the Duke of South Anglestonia as its Duke. This resulted in the SARA announcing a 3rd war of South Anglestonian independence. They were supported by Jocistan, who condemned the British Empire, beginning a diplomatic crisis. The British Empire then agreed to create a new Dominion of South Anglestonia in the future, resolving the crisis.

Creation of the Kingdom of Anglestonia

Under the "Kingdom of Anglestonia Act", the Grand Duchy of Anglestonia merged with a colony in the British Empire called Carsakhstan, which both became Grand Duchies (regions) within the newly created Kingdom of Anglestonia, although Carsakhstan adopted the new name of Aurdalaith. The new 42 square yard Kingdom dwarfed the previous Anglestonia, as the Grand Duchy made up 1/19th of the Kingdom. Anglestonia also nominally ended feudalism, categorising itself as socialist rather than feudal, although the act did not introduce any socialist reform.

Signing of the Constitution

Under the constitution of the Kingdom of Anglestonia signed on the 14th of September 2018, Anglestonia became a protectorate of the British Empire, meaning that it was not independent, although was no longer a part of the British Empire as a country, as it went from an autonomous constituent territory to a semi-sovereign state. It was at this point where Anglestonia became an absolute monarchy, as the King's power had previously been limited, as he had to follow the laws and constitution of the British Empire.

Government

Status of King

The King of Anglestonia is an absolute monarch. He must follow the constitution, although he can amend it at any time, meaning that it is not actually a barrier to his rule. The King is also the head of the Anglestonian Conservative Socialist Party (ACSP).

Economic Policy

The Kingdom of Anglestonia self categorises itself as a socialist country, and the King has stated on the government website of Anglestonia "As a moderately socialist country, it has a mixed market economy". This statement is fairly valid, as Anglestonia has several socialist and welfarist policies whilst still being a market economy. Its constitution creates socialist policy but also restricts socialist policy. In its markets, the largest business is the Anglestonian Kompot Cooperative, a consumer-owned cooperative, indicating that it is a Market Socialist economy.

However, whether or not it is a socialist country is dubious, as the King had also stated "The new Anglestonia intends to be a mildly socialist state, whilst still being under capitalism". Capitalism and socialism are often seen as contradictory. The King is also in doubt on whether socialist is a proper label, and is thus attempting to make the nation more socialist. In an Anglestonian news article about the first amendment to the Anglestonian constitution, he stated on the establishment of public entities (state entities owned by the public), "It is aimed at gearing Anglestonia more towards socialism". He later began establishing the role of governor for different institutions, with that title being held by the elected Grand Earls of different provinces, in an attempt to democratise and further socialise the economy.

Despite considering itself socialist, Anglestonia is a highly anti-communist country.

Social Policy

Anglestonia is modelled of a form of conservatism with liberal elements, however, there is a lack of social policy in Anglestonia. The only active political party is the conservative ACSP. Anglestonian conservatism centres around placing value in religion, monarchy, and tradition. There are some classical liberal policies in the constitution such as freedom from torture and freedom to speak out against the government.

Subnational Structure

The Kingdom of Anglestonia is subdivided into provinces and Grand Duchies. The Grand Duchies are called the Grand Duchy of Anglestonia and the Grand Duchy of Aurdalaith. The Grand Duchy of Anglestonia is the smallest, at 1/19th of Anglestonia, and is located in the province of Northern Anglestonia. Most of Northern Anglestonia is located within Aurdalaith, as are all other provinces.

Grand Dukes have power over their region, and may draw the counties of that region and appoint nobles to those counties. The Grand Dukes may also decide how much power those nobles have.

Each province has a Grand Earl, who has a particular role in government. For example, the Grand Earl of Western Anglestonia has power over the Police and Military, and is the Marshal of Anglestonia.

Thanedoms are plots of land, with all Anglestonian citizens being entitled to one Thanedom. Holders of Thanedoms pay no rent, although holding a Thanedom does not equate to ownership. A Thanedom can become a Manor, which is simply a more prestigious Thanedom.

Counties are drawn up by either the King or the Grand Duke. They do not have to follow the boundaries of Thanedoms, as the Grand Duchy of Anglestonia is one thanedom consisting of three counties. The majority of Anglestonia is not part of any county, although it is planned for there to be more counties in the future.

Military

The Anglestonian military is very small, only consisting of one soldier. Anglestonia intends to increase the size and power of its military.

The Grand Duchy of Aurdalaith is an official military fort, although the military cannot use the parts designated as honorary embassies.

Relation with the British Empire

Anglestonia is a protectorate of the British Empire, making it a semi-sovereign dependency. The Anglestonian constitution establishes links with the empire, such as the empire having full government, police, and military access to Anglestonian territory, Anglestonia being required to support the empire in a war, and the British Imperial Flag along with the Union Jack being "Motherland Flags" of Anglestonia.

Culture

Anglestonian culture is a mix of Welsh and English culture. The motto of Anglestonia is in Welsh, and the King chose the Welsh name Llywelyn as his regnal name. Anglestonia also has Anglo-Saxon and Germanic culture, such as its alphabet officially having the Anglo-Saxon letters Æ and þ and the German letter ß (although these have not actually been used). Anglestonia also officially celebrates Oktoberfest.

Anglestonia has a very traditional, almost feudal culture, in which government office and nobility are strongly linked. An example of this is that Grand Earls and Grand Dukes hold political power and the constitution establishes the "Royal Anglestonian Swords" as Anglestonia's elite fighting force, in which members hold the title of Knight, although this force has not yet formed.

Anglestonia has a similar culture to the British Empire, as Anglestonia started as a territory within the empire and still has official links to the British Empire. The King of Anglestonia was also the dictator of the British Empire for most of its history and remains in British Imperial politics. This means that both countries were modelled with similar views such as monarchism.

Geography

Anglestonia is located in the north of the British Isles and is surrounded by the United Kingdom. The vast majority of Anglestonia is in the North of England, however, the county of Leighfrith (the oldest part of Anglestonia) is located in Northern Ireland, giving Anglestonia a fairly large span with the furthest points being tens of miles away from eachother.

All of Anglestonia experiences a fairly homogeneous temperate oceanic climate, with fairly mild weather all year. Leighfrith has the coldest climate in Anglestonia, although this is not by a significant margin.
