Protests of the opposition and then a coup d'état occured in Baránok on 10 December 2020 because of inactivity of the President and the Government. It is sometimes called the Baranese Revolution.

Background

Free Baránok won the Baranese parliamentary election in July 2020 and their leader, K.Č. became the Prime Minister. His government was inactive for majority of the term and did practically nothing. They were also criticised for for letting the country fall into inactivity and proposing only one law during their term. This law, called the "Coconut Law" met with controversy for its absurdity (it proposed that coconuts shall have an important status in Baranese society) and was opposed by some of the MPs of the Federal Assembly of Baránok as "making no sense and profit" for the country and ultimately rejected. Shortly after this, first protests against the government were organised by Imrich Kvajda and S.S., however, these did not get endorsement from the population and ended after a couple of hours.

The coup

Requirements of Baranese people and H.K.'s message

The protests began on 10 December 2020 after Kvajda and S.S. published a short document named Requirements of Baranese people, which said that the President and Prime Minister must immediately resign due to their inactivity and "mad ideas". Minister of Economy H.K. then wrote a threatening message that if the protests will not end, ”totality will be installed.” This sparked another wave of criticism and the demonstrations grew bigger.

DaC endorsing the protesters; new government formed

After some time, it looked as though the coup will fail, again for not enough engagement from other citizens, however, Kvajda and S.S. ultimately convinced Minister of Defence and leader of Drunk and Corrupt P.L. to leave the government, which was declared dissolved with two MPs of the Federal Assembly remaining in it. The opposition seized power shortly after, electing M.M. as the new PM. Drunk and Corrupt members also joined the government, which thus had a majority of 5 MPs in the Federal Assembly.

New election of the Prime Minister; coup ends

On 11 December, one day after M.M. was elected Prime Minister, a meeting of the Coalition Council was held, in which Kvajda expressed his feelings about the election. He called it not democratic and proposed a new election, which would also allow other candidates (including the ones from the recently overthrown government) to run for the office, with the MPs of the Federal Assembly electing them. This proposal was heavily criticised by co-iniciator of the coup S.S. who wished M.M. stay in the office. However, the rest of the government agreed with the proposal and the election was held immediately after. Seven candidates ran for the office. As K.Č. and T.L. received the same amount of votes from the MPs (2), a second round was held, in which T.L. was elected Prime Minister. He then established a minority government consisting of the Democrats and ZSAMB, assuming office on 13 December.

Aftermath

Immediately after T.L. became Prime Minister, Baránok went on hiatus again, lasting until the January 2021 parliamentary election. The aftermath of the coup was especially destructive for Drunk and Corrupt. Their popularity decreased and failed to get into the parliament the first time ever in their existence in the January 2021 election. Free Baránok, the governing party before the coup, ended in opposition and the Democratic Union won the election and became the governing party. The aftermath of the coup and the political chaos also partially caused the dissolution of Baránok on 27 January 2021. In February 2022, Imrich Kvajda, the iniciator of the coup, stated that it was completely useless, as an opinion poll published shortly before the event showed increased popularity of the DUB, which meant they would most likely win the January election anyway.[1]
