The 2018 Ebenthali exodus (Portuguese: Êxodo Ebentálico de 2018) was an event which happened as a direct consequence of the Brazilian economic crisis, by which at least 11 Ebenthali citizens, our of a total population of 52 Ebenthalis, moved out of Ebenthal in search of better jobs across the Brazilian states. By that time the Ebenthali nationality law only applied for jus solis, so that only permanent residents had citizenship, and when they gave up residency (after a year living abroad), it was suspended and they had to reapply. As a consequence of the loss of a quarter of the population due to the exodus, the country entered a rapid but brief economic decline and the nationality law was modified through a constitutional amendment to its current form.
