Big Fluffy Socks for the Winter Golem is a 2020 short British artistic psychological fantasy thriller film produced, written and directed by Zarel Smith. It is Smith's seventh independent film. The film concerns a teenager, named Jacob Mort Glickman, who begins to question his sanity after he becomes obsessed with collecting socks. The featured song, retroactively titled "Winter Golem Theme", is a harsh noise wall song that was composed by experimental noise artist Fish Lord Silvers, who is also responsible for the music of Insaniam, Smith's previous film.

Smith had began developing another psychological thriller film since after he had finished Insaniam in May 2020. After deciding on making it focused around mental health, Smith finally conceived the idea in early November when his younger brother Joost Smith sarcastically suggested making it a film "about a mentally ill man collecting socks." A script was finalised on 23 November, and principal photography began in London on 26 November and concluded on 1 December. Post-production finished on 22 December. "Winter Golem Theme" was previously composed in May 2020 by Fish Lord Silvers.

The film was released on Christmas Day 2020, after early screenings took place on 23 December. The film polarised audiences, and sparked debate over the film's meaning, though some critics were opposed to its self-proclaimed artistic merit; others generally praised its cinematography, editing, music and Smith's performance as Glickman, whilst the film's runtime of twelve minutes – Smith's longest independent film yet – also drew negative feedback. The film received three nominations at the 2020 ZSR Awards in the erstwhile New Eiffel, and won Best Editing.

Production for Big Fluffy Socks for the Winter Golem lasted 29 days, making it the longest production time for any of Smith's independent films. He claims Big Fluffy Socks for the Winter Golem was his most challenging and ambitious production. Smith had began developing another psychological thriller film since after he had finished Insaniam in May 2020. After deciding on making it focused around mental health, Smith finally conceived the idea in early November when his younger brother Joost Smith sarcastically suggested making it a film "about a mentally ill man collecting socks." Filming

Principal photography took place in London between 26 November–1 December; filming commenced primarily in the erstwhile New Eiffelic cities of New Leeds and Új Repülő, whilst Plitvice appeared in wide shots. In total, over 28 minutes of footage had been shot, the most of any New Eiffelic film – it was edited down to 12 minutes, cutting over half of the footage. The film was shot on an iPhone 7 Plus, primarily at 60 frames per second for close-shots and 30 fps for wide and cinematic shots; this also indicates that the aspect ratio of the film is 4:3 and the audio is monaural. Joost helped out with cinematography for a few of the shots. For some of the shots, Smith used the DJI Osmo 3 Foldable Mobile Gimbal he was gifted for his birthday and an amateur plastic tripod he had purchased several years ago.

Post-production

Post-production began on 1 December and finished on 22 December. Smith utilised several different amateur editing software to create the film; DJI Mimo Video Editing for the colour filters, LiveCollage for sound editing, and iMovie to finish the film, along with using several different free websites for an array of differentiating purposes. Smith also created many of his own sound effects for the film. What would retroactively be known as "Winter Golem Theme" – a harsh noise wall song – was previously composed in May 2020 by experimental music artist Fish Lord Silvers. Smith had previously used one of Silvers' songs for his film Insaniam in May 2020. Smith created the film's poster by using PicCollage, LunaPic and Let's Enhance.
