Succession to the Baustralian throne is determined by descent, sex, legitimacy, and religion. Under common law, the Crown is inherited by a sovereign's children or by a childless sovereign's nearest collateral line. Before 12 May 2019, the monarch and heirs and their consort must have been in communion with the Christian church, be it Roman Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox.
