Bonumland (/bɑːnəm.lænd/ BAH-nəm-land; Bonumlandian: ᒷ╎リᔑ⚍⍑╎einauhi), officially the Republic of Bonumland, is a micronation in the United States and the United Kingdom. The largest contiguous body of land is the Bonumis region, which contains three parcels of land in Bonumis itself, Greater Bonumis, and New Roanoke, and a number of outlying non-contiguous exclaves. The capital of Bonumland is Bonumis, though it is expected that some government offices and agencies will be moved elsewhere following reconstruction.

In 2021, Bonumland had an estimated population of 18 citizens and 7 residents. The lingua franca of Bonumland is English, but a variety of Indo-European and Austronesian languages are spoken, including Bonumlandian. Geographically, several Bonumlandian claims are in three U.S. states: Georgia, Illinois, and Washington, and one donated by Rhodesia in southern England. Historically the region where Bonumlandian Potawatomi is located has been known as the Des Plaines Valley.

Mainland Bonumland has been inhabited by humans for at least 3,500 years, as proven by evidence from Peachtree Creek roughly 6 miles north of downtown Atlanta. During the colonial period the land was occupied and administered by the British Empire and the United States during and after the American Revolution. The name of Bonumland originates from its founder, Nick Rankov, a Croatian national, who declared it independent in May 2015.

Bonumlandian seperatism dates back to 2015 when the Old Republic of Bonumland was declared and for a short time existed before the independence of the New Republic later that month; it was subsumed into the New Republic later that year. Conflict over the duties of the presidency became the primary factor for the Bonumland Civil War (2019), which resulted in the establishment of a dictatorship and exile of almost all government members. Inactivity over the next year resulted in the presidency being passed down and democratic reforms being instated.

In early 2021, an independence referendum in protest of the Crown was illegally held in Caeserea, a breakaway region of Bonumland, with almost unanimous support for independence rather than continued administration under the Bonumlandian monarchy. Caeserea was declared independent later that month, and Bonumland has extreme tensions with Caeserea to this day while not recognizing them as independent.

A traditional Creek house, as was common during Native American occupation

Bonumland has been inhabited by humans for at least 3,500 years, as evidenced by specimens obtained from Peachtree Creek roughly 5 miles north of downtown Atlanta. Until about 1780, during the American Revolution, the region where Bonumland and its neighboorhood were built was originally Creek and Cherokee territory that spanned from the western border of Georgia state to eastern Alabama, as north as Tennesee and as south as the Florida Keys. In 1835, some leaders of the Cherokee Nation ceded their territory to the United States without the consent of the majority of the Cherokee people in exchange for land out west under the Treaty of New Echota, an act that led to the Trail of Tears.

During the American Civil War, the vicinity of Bonumland served as an important railroad and military supply hub. Its capture from the Confederates by the Union directly led to the re-election of Abraham Lincoln and the surrender of the Confederacy. After the war, it became a center of black education with the foundation of Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Clark University, Spelman College, and Morris Brown College. The Atlanta Massacre occurred in 1906, which briefly threw the region into fear and tensions. Much later, Bonumland's home county became a party in the infamous Bostock v. Clayton County case, where the United States Supreme Court ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protected employees against discrimination based on their sexuality or because they are transgender, a point that is heavily emphasized by LGBT activists in Bonumland.

Modern history

The date of establishment of Bonumland is subject to debate. Nick Rankov declared the First Republic on 2 May 2015, and the New Republic (modern Bonumland) on 23 May of the same year. Some consider 2 May as the official date of foundation while some consider the First Republic and New Republic separate entities, and therefore 23 May is the correct foundation date. The most widely accepted date of foundation, however, is the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Establishment, which took place on 23 May. Said declaration was mailed to then-President of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.

August 2018 crisis

In August 2018, a situation unfolded between President Rankov, the Prime Minister, and various Parliament ministers. Certain motives drove President Rankov to fire select ministers in Parliament, warranting a fierce reaction from the Conservative opposition. The Conservatives, in response, dismissed the Parliament[a]; however, the 2015 constitution dictated that if the whole party dismissed the Parliament, it would mean the end of the Parliament, since there are only two parties. Therefore, the Prime Minister resigned and the Liberal Democratic ministers left the Parliament Hall. The situation forced President Rankov to sign the special decree known as gentis finem[b]. By signing this, Bonumland officially ceased to exist. A few days later an agreement was reached between the President, the Prime Minister, and the opposition ministers, and the announcement was made that Bonumland would continue its existence as a micronation. Rankov also announced in his address that the Parliament would undergo certain reforms in the future.

Civil war

Nick Rankov's address concerning the state of coup d'etats

In January 2019, the Parliament and Diplomatic Council held a joint meeting. Together, the two bodies adopted a resolution that formally condemned President Rankov for "authoritarianism, attempting to establish a dictatorship, and restricting the power of Bonumland's government institution", as well as sending an ultimatum to Rankov to resign or face a coup. Rankov rejected the ultimatum. In response, the Parliament and Diplomatic Council, in conjunction, passed an Act formally charging Rankov with treason and beginning impeachment proceedings against him. However, the 2015 constitution did not mention anything about impeachment of the president, and therefore the "coup" was considered illegal. President Rankov then took action, abolishing the Parliament and Diplomatic Council members' citizenships on the basis of betrayal and committing the illegal act of the coup on the president. He appointed his only loyalist - Addison Dillon - as Vice President.

Following what is now known as the "Bonumlandian Civil War", Bonumland went into a long period of inactivity. Over a year later, in January 2020, Rankov resigned as President, passing the office to Vice President Dillon.

In November 2020, a presidential election was held between President Dillon, Board Member Azerianus Severanus, and activist Renzo Wessels. Because no candidate received a majority, a runoff election was held between the top two candidates: Dillon and Severanus. Bonumland News announced that Dillon had been re-elected by just one vote, but this was controversial because the vote had not yet closed and many people still had not voted. After polls closed, vote counters miscounted and still declared Dillon the winner even though Severanus had in fact won by two votes. Later, this mistake was corrected and Severanus took the oath of office as president of Bonumland. Dillon was, however, elected to the National Assembly after running unopposed.

Before leaving office, President Dillon passed the Political Parties Act 2020, which abolished the two-party system and allowed the formation of new parties through a bureaucratic process. This enabled Gaia Grìbhinneach to establish the Revolutionary National Collectivist Party, which Dillon promptly joined. The party's main goal was the installation of Dillon in a monarchical position, something that President Severanus expressly opposed. Defectors from the Conservative Party to the RNCP enabled Grìbhinneach and Dillon to propose an Act codenamed "The Package", which would begin a provisional government in anticipation of a monarchical conversion, which was instantly vetoed by Severanus. The National Assembly, with their RNCP majority, overrode Severanus' veto, ending his presidency. After the provisional government passed the 2021 constitution, the monarchy was established and Dillon was installed as monarch, although she chose the regnal name "Isabella".

Florania, where Caeserea was declared independent
Disputed independence of Caeserea

In January 2021, Jonas Rhymer, Emmeline Marino (who at the time was known as Paris Wright), Benjamin Pickles, and Isaiah Burdette were discussing in a private DM conversation whether Burdette's removal as President of Florania was unconstitutional. Rhymer had pointed out that he declared Caeserea independent after Burdette's removal, and a consensus was reached among the group that it would be revived in Bonumland in protest of the monarchization. Pickles, the Premier of Florania, agreed to allow Florania to be declared independent as the new Caeserea. The group proposed the Wright Ultimatum to Empress Isabella, which she promptly rejected; after this, a declaration of independence was sent and Caeserea was declared independent of Bonumland.

Despite being recognized by West River and Wendatia, the legal basis of Caeserean independence has raised questions over the interpretation of Article I of the Bonumlandian Constitution, which states "the territory of the Empire is inalienable". Seperatists argue that since the chief executive agreed to the independence, and since the territory of Florania was not modified, the Caeserean claim to independence is valid; however, the government argues that the section in question was instead referring to the territory of Bonumland as a whole rather than one territory, and therefore Caeserean independence is illegal. It is also pointed out that Florania is inhabited by Bonumlandian citizens unaware of the independence of Caeserea, and that no Caeseran leaders live on the land, which violates the criteria for statehood as laid out by the Montevideo Convention. To this day, the legal status of Caeserea is disputed by Caeserean seperatists, the Bonumlandian government, and external observers.

Government and politics

System of government

The monarch of Bonumland is known as the Emperor if male and Empress if female. The position is non-hereditary, and the monarch may at any time declare any person of their choosing to become the heir apparent. The monarch's primary responsibility is the administration of meetings of the National Assembly. The monarch also occupies the duties of the chief diplomat of Bonumland and the commander of the Bonumlandian Coast Guard. The monarch may, if need be, appoint consuls as a point of contact for a region or to spread the nation's influence. The current monarch is Isabella I.

The National Assembly is the legislative body of Bonumland. The National Assembly is not an elected body; rather, every citizen of age is a member. Any citizen may propose legislation to a referendum with the signatures of at least a fifth of the population, may vote on proposed legislation, and can withdraw legislation they have proposed if desired. "Aye", "nay", and "abstain" are the options on every referendum, and a plurality of "aye" votes are required to pass any legislation. Acts of the National Assembly are automatically granted assent by the monarch as a symbolic gesture.

The Executive Council are a group of executives who are the heads of government ministries. All ministers of the Executive Council are democratically elected by Bonumlandian citizens to one-year terms, infinitely renewable.

Laws are enforced indirectly by the Ministry of Justice, which runs the Bonumlandian police department. Because Bonumland is for the most part Internet-based, the police force is cyber and is generally tasked with monitoring government chatrooms and calls. The Bonumlandian courts are led by a single judge, who is democratically elected. Crimes in Bonumland are divided into three categories:

  • Misdemeanors: Minor offenses that warrant only a small punishment and no jury, requiring only a judge to make a ruling.
  • Wobblers: Offenses that can be tried as either a misdemeanor or a felony depending on its severity. Requires a jury and judge.
  • Felonies: Major offenses that require a jury, judge, and preliminary hearing.

It is the responsibility of the judge to categorize the cases that arise, as well as to decide a court date and the punishment for the defendant if indicted by the jury. The judge serves until resignation or death unless recalled, which can be done with a special motion of the National Assembly. A special election will be held in the case of a vacancy.

Foreign relations

Bonumland has close relations with many relations in an unnamed sector comprising the nations of Bonumland, Rhodesia, Georgienstine, Windover, and West River. Bonumland is most active in the MicroWiki sector, and to a lesser extent on Facebook, though formal relations through Facebook are strictly refrained from in Bonumland's foreign policy. Bonumland also has relations with Ponderosa Hills and Naveria.

Bonumland has tense relations with Caeserea, a breakaway state that declared independence in 2021 in protest of the monarchy. It is recognized by West River and Wendatia. Bonumland does not recognize Caeserea. In April 2021, Empress Isabella I invoked Imperial Decree VI (Caeserea), which formally denounced Caeserea as fraudulent, as well as pointing out several of the problems with its administration; namely, hypocrisy due to the original republic declaring independence becuase of a violation of the Floranian Constitution but declaring independence from Bonumland that is in violation of the Constitution, and weak administration since Caeserea is located in a suburban backyard far away from any Caeserean leader and therefore the administration of the claims are ineffective. The Decree also criticized the West River Confederation for recognizing a breakaway state of a close partner.

Administrative divisions

A small percentage of Bonumland's economy comes from fishing. The majority of economic growth comes from agriculture. The region's biodiversity, some of the most important in the Atlanta Cluster, is threatened by macronational industrial and mining activities. The actions of neighboring macronations have warranted civil unrest in Bonumland many times. In January 2021, a resolution was passed to calm the civil unrest by taking direct action; namely, spreading awareness of the threats to the ecosystem, donating to large climate charities, and expanding farming operations. Bonumland exports fish and domestic crops locally.

The Republic of Bonumland enjoys several holidays, including traditional holidays such as New Years' Day and national holidays such as Bonumland Day. Holidays in Bonumland are designed to cater to the likes of all Bonumlandians in the spirit of religious observance. These include not recognizing religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter, although breaks are scheduled around these holidays for citizens who do wish to celebrate.

National symbols

National symbols of Bonumland typically involve the colors blue and green. The royal standard does not follow this color scheme as it is meant to be representative of the monarch and not of the nation. The national animal is the eagle, which represents inspiration, victory, pride, and royalty.

  1. Dismissing the Parliament means to censure, or an expression of formal disapproval.
  2. "The end of the nation" in Latin.
