The First Right Honourable John Otto|
The New Flanders Reconquest was an operation conducted by the United Kingdoms of The Danube and New Flanders and Her Commonwealth against the Archduchy of New Flanders with the purpose of incorporating the latter into the Kingdom of New Flanders. The operation began on the 29th of June, 2018, when Danubine forces crossed the international border into the Archduchy's lands and instituted a military regime. The conflict ended de facto following the invasion and collapse of the Archduchy's defenses, however, de jure the conflict continued one for the coming weeks, as Shorewell maintained the annexation to be illegal as per the Ehengntyre Accords and Nozax Declaration, and continued to recognize the state. Following intensive negotiations in mid-July, Shorewell and The Danubes negotiated an armistice, officially ending the conflict and establishing a ceasefire zone next to the Archduchy, following the withdrawal of Danubine forces.
After the New Flanders Crisis, the United Kingdoms of The Danube and New Flanders and Her Commonwealth attempted to establish a military zone around the Archduchy to connect isolated parts of the Kingdom together. Shorewell protested heavily, maintaining that the Archduchy would effectively become an enclave of the Union. It proposed the establishment of a zone where neither side would station any military troops, thus allowing for access and an effective corridor to other nations for the Archduchy. The proposal was promptly rejected, followed by King Alex authorizing an invasion of the Archduchy in hopes of settling the dispute through military means.
The invasion was launched at about 5:24 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time), having notified the Sultan of his plans 15 minutes prior. 10 Danubine forces entered into the Archduchy, disestablished the government, and effectively occupied the state, as it remained for a few weeks. Shorewell believed that the ivasion proved the ill will harbored by the Union against the Archduchy, something which it had repeatedly expressed before during negotiations. The short conflict ended with a complete de facto annexation of the nation into the Union, though the Shorewellese government maintains such an annexation is illegal, and recognizes the complete sovereignty and independence of the Archduchy. The Archduchy's status as a protected state of Shorewell, and thus the invasion is recognized as an attack on the Sultanate itself.
The Sultan attempted to negotiate a deal with King Alex, calling for it to not violate the terms of the Ehengntyre Accords and the Nozax Declaration. The latter initially refused to participate in talks until Shorewell withdrew its recognition for the Archduchy. Later both leaders did come around and engaged in a two-hour discussion on various matters, eventually agreeing to the terms of an armistice, and a reaffirmation of the previously signed agreements. A total, complete, and lasting ceasefire was implemented, and Shorewell recognized the establishment of Flanders A-Muigh.
