Natal was formerly a Duchy within the Commonwealth of Hobartstown and Victoria, and was ruled over by Joseph Emmanuel de Chavannes, Duke of Natal and Prince of the Bregentines. On 8 August 2014, the Duchy was elevated by letters patent to a Grand Duchy. In the Dissolution Act 2014, enacted by the Parliament of the Commonwealth on 9 August 2014, the Grand Duchy of Natal was established as the successor to the Commonwealth with Joseph Emmanuel de Chavannes becoming sovereign Grand Duke.

The Dukedom of Natal was established on 21 July 2014 by a royal proclamation of Jonathan, Sovereign of the Commonwealth of Hobartstown and Victoria and Grand Duke of the Bregne. Joseph Emmanuel de Chavannes, a Victorian aristocrat and politician from the Province of Natal, was declared a Prince of the Bregentines and the Duke of Natal, with the style of Royal Highness. By virtue of gaining the Patriciate - the Victorian equivalent of a Peerage - Joseph Emmanuel was granted a seat on the House of Patricians, and was later elected Speaker of the House. The Duke was also named Bishop of Natal and Cardinal Rector of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, establishing the precedent of the Natalian Monarch's authority over the Church of Natal.

Once Natal was sovereign, Joseph Emmanuel was proclaimed His Royal Highness Joseph I, by the Grace of God, Grand Duke of Natal, Ruler of His other Domains and Territories, Prince of the Bregentines, Head of the House of Emmanuel, Defender of the Faith. Joseph I soon enacted Letters patent constituting Provinces, Counties, Dukes and Earls, appointing the various nobles of the realm and calling together the Chamber of Lords to serve as the legislature of the Grand Duchy. Among these were Daniel Vijzel, 1st Duke of New Victoria, who was later appointed Grand Pensionary.

The decree also offered the Natalian Grand Duke the titles of King of Natal, Prince-Elector of the Empire and Apostolic Majesty. On 27 May, the Grand Duke signed a proclamation which accepted the invitation of His Royal and Imperial Majesty. As such, the Grand Duke became King of Natal, assuming the full style of His Royal and Apostolic Majesty Joseph the First, by the Grace of God, King of Natal, Prince of the Empire, Prince of the Bregentines, Head of the House of Emmanuel, Defender of the Christian Faith. On 15 June 2016, the Holy Roman Emperor granted His Royal and Apostolic Majesty the title of Lord of Barentszburg in Spitsbergen.

The Monarch holds absolute power over the realm, ruling through Letters patent and Royal Proclamations, the former serving to bestow offices, peerages, noble titles and knighthoods and the latter serving as executive orders. The Grand Pensionary, appointed by the Monarch by Letters patent, is the head of government and presides over the Council of State. The Council of State consists of the Grand Pensionary, the Secretary of State for Home Affairs, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the Secretary of State for Defense. The Chamber of Lords, consisting of all the nobles and peers of the realm, is the de jure legislature, although it seldom enacts legislation.

Natal is considered relatively isolated on the international front. The Grand Duchy is the foremost nation in what has been termed the "Emmanuelian Empire", a group of four micronations (Natal, the Kingdom of New Elmhurst, the Grand Principality of Dalton and Montania) which are all ruled over by a member of the House of Emmanuel. The so-called Empire formerly included the Kingdom of Wensleydale, but following a Republican uprising the monarchy was dissolved.

The Kingdom of Natal is a self-proclaimed sovereign nation which exists as an exercise in absolute monarchism and Afrikaner and English culture. The Kingdom of Natal claims no physical territory, and as such self-classifies as a nation rather than a state. Natal is ruled over by a King, His Royal and Apostolic Majesty Joseph I. It's legislative body is the Koninklike Vergadering, and the Kingdom's reigning house is the House of Emmanuel.

Etymology

Natal was named for the South African state and former Boer republic of KwaZulu-Natal. The name "Natal" was given to that land by Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama, who first saw its coast on Christmas Day 1497 (Natal being the Portuguese word for Christmas). The choice of the name "Natal" for the then Bregentine province was an example of the Anglo-Dutch and Afrikaner culture of Hobartstown and Victoria.

History

On 8 August 2014, the Dukedom of Natal was elevated to a Grand Dukedom, with Joseph Emmanuel becoming Grand Duke of Natal. The next day, the Parliament of the Commonwealth passed an Act dissolving Hobartstown and Victoria, establishing the Grand Duchy of Natal as the Commonwealth's sole successor, with Joseph Emmanuel as its sovereign.

Joseph Emmanuel de Chavannes assumed the full style of His Royal Highness Joseph the First, by the Grace of God, Grand Duke of Natal, Prince of the Bregentines, Ruler of His other Realms and Territories, Head of the House of Emmanuel, Defender of the Faith. Grand Duke Joseph established the various titles of nobility of the Realm, the Church of Natal, and the organs of the Royal Government.

On 23 May 2015, His Royal and Imperial Majesty Quentin, King of Wyvern and Holy Roman Emperor, signed an imperial decree inviting the Grand Duchy of Natal to swear fealty to the Emperor and the Empire, granting the Grand Duke the rights, privileges and duties of partaking of and voting in sessions of the Imperial Diet, to vote on the Emperor's successor, to be protected by and protect the Emperor and the Empire.

Following a brief period of governmental inactivity, King Joseph enacted the Decree of Koningswyk, which dissolved the Privy Council and the Church of Natal and established the Koninklike Vergadering to serve as the legislative assembly of the realm. The Decree also ordered that a fundamental statute be enacted for the Realm, which is currently being composed by King Joseph and the incumbent Lord High Chancellor of Natal, Duke Bradley van Dullahan.

Politics and government

Natal is an absolute monarchy. The King, who is the Sovereign of the realm, holds absolute power by divine right of kings. The current Sovereign is His Royal and Apostolic Majesty Joseph, by the Grace of God, King of Natal, etc. etc. etc.
