Florania (/flɒr..nj.ʌ/), fully known as the Free Republic of Florania, is a self-declared sovereign state; known as a micronation or new country project, which is not recognized by any major geopolitical organization such as the United Nations. It seceded from the United States on 9 July 2020 as a protest against prejudice. As a presidential republic, the executive branch of the Floranian government is quite powerful compared to other branches of government, such as the legislative branch or judicial branch. Florania has stamps, currency, passports, identification cards, and genuine quest for statehood.

Etymology

Florida, where Florania is located, comes from the Spanish word for "flower": "flora". This linguistic device was also used when Florania was named. It was originally called "Libertia", "Semalone", and "Sabal".

Something from Florania is called "Floranian" or "a Floranian". When using it descriptively, the term "Florenic" is used.

Flag

The flag of Florania was inspired by the flags of Correna and Wegmat. The blue on the flag represents liberty, the white represents equality, the yellow represents happiness, and the black star represents strength.

History

Pre-Florania

The first people to inhabit present-day Florania were the Choctaw tribe who lived in the area since roughly the year 300 A.D. The Spanish colonization of the Americas caused many Choctaw people to flee west along the Trail of Tears, around when the city of Pensacola (where Florania is located) was founded in 1559. The area was sold to France in 1719, and re-sold to the Spanish in 1722. It was taken forcefully by the British in 1763, and once again re-taken by the Spanish in 1781. Finally, among the effects of the Adams–Onís Treaty in 1819, all of Florida was ceded to the United States.

During the American Civil War, the Pensacola area was the home of Fort Barrancas, Fort Pickens, and Fort McRee. Fort Pickens is notable for being the only of the three forts to be held entirely by the Union for the duration of the war.

Creation and provisional government

Florania was created as a protest against the United States government by Americans Aydan Dillon (known as "Dillon the first" in Florania), Dante Molina, and Aydan's cat Hector. It was described by the former Dillon as being a "serious micronation" to raise awareness of social injustices, promote freedom of expression, and perhaps one day gain recognition from the United States though it is quite unlikely.

After the micronation's creation on 9 June 2020, it immediately entered a period of stabilization. Dillon the first and Molina declared a provisional government. Molina was tasked with drafting the nation's constitution, designing passports and currency, and issuing identity cards; while Dillon was tasked with boosting the nation's internet presence on Discord, YouTube, and most notably MicroWiki.

Molina resigned as Prime Minister on 16 July 2020, just one week after the nation's birth. He had made a post in the Floranian Discord server earlier that day about his intention to resign, which was supported by the President. He officially resigned at 5:30 am CST, vacating this position after his resignation.

Government

Branches

Executive branch

The executive branch is the largest and most important of the three branches of the Floranian government. It is directly led by the President and his Cabinet, which is made up of the Secretary of War and Foreign Affairs; the Secretary of Finance; the Secretary of Home Affairs; the Secretary of Health, Education, and Infrastructure; and the Secretary of Immigration. The Benson Building in Ellesmere serves as the meeting place of the President and his cabinet, as well as the General Assembly. A State Secretary separate from the Cabinet is also existent; to answer phone calls, emails, faxes, and letters on the President's behalf. The President also has minor control over the legislative and judicial branches.

Legislative branch

The legislative branch's responsibility is to propose bills to be either signed or vetoed by the President. It is made up of the General Assembly, a bicameral legislative body led by the Chancellor and Prime Minister. The Chancellor runs the upper house, the Senate, and ceremonially outranks the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister runs the lower house, the House of Ministers, and is generally more active in outside affairs.

Judicial branch

The judicial branch is the smallest, yet quite an important branch of government responsible for maintaining the Floranian Courts, which are lead by the Chief Magistrate. The Courts consist of three members appointed by the President, which include the aforementioned Chief Magistrate and two "lesser" magistrates, who's job is hearing the case presented and deciding the severity of the crime provided they are found guilty by the Inquisition. The Inquisition is equivalent to a jury, in which members of the public listen to a case and decide guilty or not.

Provisional governments

Provisional governments can be declared at any time by the President, usually during periods of instability or state of emergencies. During a period of a provisional government, known "provisional periods", the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Chancellor, and Chief Magistrate may assume total control divided among the five of them. When this happens, it is called a "provisional council" with the President acting as a "chairman". Provisional Councils work similar to the General Assembly; a bill can be proposed by any member, then voted on by the rest of the members. If a bill receives a simple majority, it is passed by the Provisional Council and becomes a law. In addition to being able to declare a provisional period, the President may also end the provisional period, however this must be voted upon by the Provisional Council.

Territory

Florania is located in Pensacola, Florida. Its exact location is a closely guarded secret, known only by the current President, his extended family, and his most trusted friends. The total land area of Florania is roughly 576 ft²; made up of the current President's bedroom and a portion of his yard, extending out from his room to an enclosing fence. Within the bedroom, known as the Benson Building, sits a border checkpoint between Florania and the United States. Though this serves as the only point of entry, it is rarely guarded and is normally left unattended except for times of war and state of emergencies.

Foreign Affairs

President Dillon and his family will attend MicroCon 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada, marking the second time he meets with any micronational leader. The first was in June 2019 when he visited the Republic of Molossia.

Policy

In some circumstances, Florania does enter formal relations with other micronations. Florania has applied to join the Grand Unified Micronational and Cupertino Alliance, and President Dillon has made a few statements in which he expresses intent to visit micronations personally, such as when he visited Molossia in June 2019. He has made plans to visit Austenasian capital Wrythe, Ikonia, and most significantly New Eiffel.

Unilateral recognition

Defense Forces

Florania has no active military. Instead, military duties are carried out by the Presidential Guard, Coast Guard, and Cyber Force. Only true Floranian citizens may serve in any of the branches of the "armed forces" due to constraints on travel, logistics, and economics.

Media and Culture

Media

Florania has several government-owned news outlets and agencies, the most prominent being the Ellesmere Press. The Ellesmere Press releases their stories via their website or the Floranian YouTube channel.

The Ellesmere Press is also responsible for the filming of Floranian propaganda movies. One such movie is currently in production and is expected to be released by early-to-mid March 2021.

The local press, most notable WFHS's school news show, the UPROAR, has made several stories about the micronation and their mission to spread awareness, an act which was acknowledged by the government as being "thoughtful" and "kind".

Culture

National symbols

The national animal of Florania is the swan, which represents calmness and serenity. It was chosen over the dove and alligator, which were also being considered. The flag and coat of arms were designed together, and they symbolize roughly the same thing.

Currency

The national currency of Florania is the "Florenic franc", which was inspired by the Molossian valora and the US dollar, which the franc is pegged to. Its current value is 1 franc to 0.25 US dollars, which would give the franc the same value as a US quarter. It comes in notes of 4, 8, 20, 40, 80, 160, and 420.
