The flag of the Unified Royal States of Australis, also known as the Hexi-Star flag, is the current civil and state flag of Australis. The flag was designed and subsequently approved by Daniel Hamilton, the Grand Duke of Australis, on 7 July 2020. The current flag was adopted following criticism of the previous flag, and to also better represent a change in the nations governance from the original Pentarchy system to the nation's present form as a Grand Duchy.

Design

The flag of Australis is a vertical flag composed of four colours in a symmetrical design, and features six stars. Five outer five pointed stars surround a large inner five-pointed star, representing the original five founders of Australis, and also the five original states of Australis: Amicitia, Integritas, Beatitudinem, Felicitatem and Aequalitatem. The inner five pointed star represents the five states unified into one nation.

Two of the colours featured on the flag, green and gold, are the national colours of Australis, in addition to its macronation, Australia.[1] The colours represent the native Australian Golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha). The blue on the flag represents the wisdom and happiness of the Australissian people, and the white represents the peace and purity of Australis.

Officially, the flag is blazoned as follows:[2]

Azure between a mullet of five points, five more mullets of five points in annulo all Argent, two tierces, the dexter tierced per pale Or Vert Argent the sinister tierced per pale Argent Vert Or.

Display

Currently, only one physical cloth Australissian flag has been created, as well as several other paper flags. Measuring 96 by 54 centimetres, it was created by MicroFlag, an international flagmaker owned by Lostislandic politician Yaroslav Mar. Currently, the flag is on permanent display at the Royal Residence of Australis located in New Yera, Amicitia. It has been proposed that more flags will be sourced from Anley, another flagmaker, in the future. The former Prime Minister of Australis, Cameron Koehler, stated that he would be purchasing a flag of Australis from Anley, to display at his residence in Florida, USA.

Flying standards

The Flag Code of Australis dictates that the flag must be hoisted at a 90 degree angle perpendicular to the ground, or at any angle above 45 degrees perpendicular to the ground. On days of remembrance or mourning, the flag is permitted to be flown at half-mast, or horizontal, with the hoist parallel to the ground. It is considered illegal to damage or destroy a flag of Australis, or to fly the flag upside-down. [2]

The flag was flown at horizontal mast for two weeks in the residence of the Grand Duke in accordance with mourning procedures, following the death of Blake, one of the two national hounds of Australis owned by the House of Roscoe.

August Flag Challenge

Throughout the month of August 2020, the Australissian Government held a public event to fly the Australissian flag in as many locations as possible. The idea was inspired by Operation Wegstany, a similar event held in the US-based micronation of Wegmat. Eight people participated in the challenge across four countries, each from another continent - France, US, Australia and India, in Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia respectively.[3]

As the challenge was widely viewed as a success, it is believed that the challenge will form an integral part of Australissian cultural development, with the possibility that the August Flag Challenge will be repeated annually.

Flag Day

Flag Day is a national holiday in Australis, as specified by the Australissian Codex of National Holidays.[4] It is held annually on 7 July, to celebrate the adoption of the current Australissian flag. The first Flag Day is scheduled to occur on Wednesday 7 July 2021. The Codex further describes the national day:

Flag Day, held on July 7, is a proud day for citizens of Australis, where we come together and fly our national flag proudly, and celebrate what it means to be an Australissian. - Australissian Codex of National Holidays

Other notable flags

In addition to the national flag of Australis, several other flags have been implemented for subdivisions of Australis, such as states and cities. All of these flags were personally designed by the Grand Duke, and attempt to incorporate the national colours of Australis - green and gold.

State flags

Each state of Australis has a flag used for individual representation. Often, these flags incorporate the national colours of Australis. There are three state flags, for the three states of Australis.

City Flags

Currently, just one city has an approved flag - New Yera, the capital city of Australis, located in Amicitia. The flag was designed on 28 January 2021, and implemented on 29 January 2021.

Adopted 9 April 2020 - 7 July 2020
Designed by Daniel Hamilton

In its history, Australis has adopted two flags. The first flag, designed by Daniel Hamilton in April 2020, was hastily made with the Microsoft Windows 10 application, Paint 3D. As a result of the rushed nature of the design and the limitations of the software used to create the flag, several issues arose once the flag had been implemented. Although the flag was designed with a ratio of 1:2, it was revealed that one side was slightly longer than the other, bringing concerns about the flag's suitability for further use. In addition, it was also found that the five pointed star situated on the left side of the flag was not correctly centered relative to the yellow half of the flag. In addition, several micronationalists pointed out that the left half of the flag constituted a violation of the rule of tincture, stating that metal should not be put on metal, with the heraldic colours or and argent, known as yellow and white respectively, being considered metal. The specific violation discovered on the flag's design was the instance of the argent (white) five pointed star charged on the or (yellow) field. [5] As a result of this, the Grand Duke of Australis designed another flag, in line with the rule of tincture, which was subsequently adopted as the new and current flag of Australis.
