Empire of Aenopia, (/njpɑː/ (About this sound (listen))) officially known as the Empire of Aenopia and her Dependencies and often referred to as Aenopia, is an autonomous territorial entity which claims to be a sovereign state however it is more commonly referred to as a micronation to the majority of people.[3] Founded in the macronation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (commonly referred to by many as the UK), Aenopia declared independence on 1 July 2019 from said entity. The nation is made up of 5 non-contiguous enclave territories surrounded by the counties of West Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire in the United Kingdom. The Empire is split into 2 main sections: North Aenopia (Which includes the Territories of Greater New Aberdare and New Llandudno and Subsidiaries) and South Aenopia (Which includes the territories of Bryniau Gwyrdd, Aenopian Calver and Aenopian Teme). Dependencies and dominions are covered under a 3rd minor section titled Her Dependencies.

The sovereign state is ruled by an Emperor under an absolute monarchy. Due to a lack of recognition from all 196 U.N member nations and 2 observer nations, the sovereignty of Aenopia is often questioned, hence the reason as for Aenopia hosting the title of micronation.[4]

Etymology and terminology

The origin of the name Aenopia is believed to have come from random letters being thrown together by Logan I himself. Settlements are named after Welsh towns and Cities, usually with the prefix 'New' added to the start. This rule is excepted by Port Machyllneth, which features 'Port' as a Prefix, and the cities of White and Sough, which are both named after the local area. Technically, the name Aenopia has some unintentional meanings in other languages. 'Opia' is used to indicate a visual disorder or condition [5] whilst 'Aen' has numerous meanings; such as in Marshallese meaning 'Iron' [6], however in Welsh Aen is used as a plural of mynd [7] meaning 'to go' [8] whilst in Irish, Aen can be an alternative form of aon [9] which means 'one'. [10]

'Aenopian' is the official demonym used to describe something belonging to Aenopia, this is also the demonym for someone from Aenopia.

Technically, 'Aenopia' can refer to the whole Empire, or to the sovereign state of Aenopia, which does not include the territories or sections; there is a small distinction between the two. 'Aenopia' is also the ac name for The Empire of Aenopia, which is often used by other nations in informal discussions and ease of communication.

Flag Origin

The origin of Aenopia's flag, seen as an artist's impression of the operator's new trains. Credit:TPE

The flag was initially designed during the planning stages of Aenopia when it was a Federation. The design comes from the British Train Operator Transpennine Express,[11] a regional train operator that runs services across the North of England operated by FirstGroup.[12] This flag was changed on 2 February 2020 to a more simplistic design, featuring the Coat of Arms situated between two dark blue squares.

The flag designs for the 3 original territories usually follow a stripe down the middle, with no direct link to anything, unlike the main flag. Post - Development Aenopia flags for territories such as Greater New Aberdare tend to follow a more freestyle approach without the set specifications. This means that more varied designs can be created, which in turn creates a more colourful and vibrant nation in terms of national symbols.

The Beginning

A map of Aenopian Calver, showing off the cities of White and Sough. between the cities is Aenopian Plushunia

Aenopia was formed on 1 July 2019 initially under the name of the 'Federation of Aenopia'. However, only a few hours passed before talks were underway with James Ellis of Empire of Emosia to become a dominion. Following an agreement being reached, a treaty was signed on the same day annexing the Aenopian territory now known as New Llandudno and Subsidiaries. Logan became 'Governor of Aenopia' and Aenopia subsequently became a dominion of Emosia.[13]

Following this, Aenopia began developing a series of rockets, with the first being a simple matchstick rocket named Nova I. 2 launches were tried in all, with both ending in failure. It was intended that the rocket be repurposed as a 'missile' in the armed forces once it's scientific uses are complete, however, this idea was rejected due to the absurdity of it. Along with this, the Aenopian Aeronautics Administration (AAA) was set up. This covered space exploration and the development and testing of new aviation technology.

Independence and Rapid Growth

On 15 August 2019, Aenopia gained independence from the Empire of Emosia after one month. [14] Free movement between all nations involved (this included Aenopia, Emosia and Qaflana) ended, and all Aenopians with dual Emosian citizenship had their dual citizenship revoked. After Aenopian independence, Aenopia began to expand, with a small island located in the River Teme and a small grassy area in the Peak District near the small British town of Grindleford, Derbyshire both being claimed in July 2019. Logan I also became the Governor of Aenopian Plushunia; a Crown Dependency located within Aenopian Calver on 4 August 2019.

On 20 August 2019, it was decided to withdraw Aenopia from the largely-controversial Organisation of Active Micronations (originally named New Eiffel Union of Micronations [15]) following internal disputes and instability within the organisation as a whole. 6 days later the Organisation of Active Micronations (2019) was dissolved after other influential members such as Phokland, New Eiffel and Emosia. Despite this, Aenopia started reaching out to other nations and other organisations to improve its position within the community. Aenopia was accepted as an Observer on 6 October 2019 and later as a Provisional state on 10 November 2019.[16] On 24 August 2019, Greater New Aberdare was annexed, increasing the number of citizens to 6. Following this annexation, it was decided to revoke New Llandudno's Capital status and instead grant it to the new city of New Aberdare because of the location.

Settlement and Economic Development

During November 2019, development decreased. Communication with other nations continued to increase, and Aenopia was accepted as a Full Member after the Quorum of Delegates convened and voted on 27 November 2019.[17]

After the annexation of Greater New Aberdare in August 2019, annexation of land ceased completely. An attempt was made to annex a small pocket of land in a forest near to the Spa town of Ilkley named 'Blaenau Novae', the land was unceremoniously annexed in December 2019. However, the claim was redacted a few days later. The reason for the relinquishing of the claim is unclear, with it being believed that access was too difficult to be able to enforce the claim because of the distance from New Aberdare (the centre of Aenopia) and the irregularity of visits to the area. Following this, the flag intended for the territory was instead assigned to Aenopian Teme to replace the previous flag.

The Reform Act

Following criticism from certain Micronationalists referring to Aenopia as 'Highly Simulationist' due to its history, it was decided by HRH Logan I to publish 'The Reform Act'. Made up of a document consisting of 26 articles with the main objective being to improve the internal and external political position of Aenopia, the contents of the document ranged from updating the National Symbols (Replacing the flag and National anthem and obtaining a Coat of Arms) to the formation of a Parliament of Aenopia and a legal system. On 2 February 2020 the first 3 requirements out of the 26 in the Document were fulfilled; this saw the replacement of the National Anthem and State flag and the creation of a Coat of Arms. [18]

On 21 February 2020, Bryniau Gwyrdd was annexed, bringing the population up to 9. The territory, affectionately known as 'Bry-Gwy' became the 3rd territory of Southern Aenopia and provides as a support for the nearby Aenopian Teme.

Aenopia within the United Kingdom

The total surface area of the Empire of Aenopia is approximately 14,140m² (3.494 acres). Aenopia has one territory in each British county, with these being: New Llandudno and Subsidiaries and Greater New Aberdare in West Yorkshire, Aenopian Calver in Derbyshire and Aenopian Teme in Shropshire

Most of Aenopia is empty grassland, with at least 28% being covered in trees. Land is generally flat and has no distinctive natural features, except for Aenopian Teme which is located on top of the River Teme, hence the name. The vast majority of Aenopia's surface comes from the New Llandudno and Subsidiaries and Aenopian Calver, which consist of large fields as well as some medium-sized wooded areas, and are completely uninhabited.

Aenopia, like the rest of Great Britain, has a temperate climate. Temperatures are usually within a range of 2 °C - 7 °C in winter but can drop as low as -11 °C. In summer, the average temperature range is 12 °C - 21 °C, but can rarely reach as high as 33 °C. Winters are characterized by rain and, in recent years, large downfalls of snow. Summers are warm and humid with occasional heavy rainstorms, however, there are usually only about one or two thunderstorms per year.[19] The record temperature recorded in Aenopia is 40.2 °C in New Llandudno, however, the accuracy of such is often questioned.

The Empire of Aenopia is made up of its home region or 'country', simply called Aenopia, and its colonies and territories. This is commonly located in New Aberdare, the new capital of Aenopia due to its location. The country plays an important role in the administration of the Empire due to the ease of control. Finally, The country also has a position of nobility attached to it, however, this position is part of the Monarchy.

The next level of administration is Regions. The country of Aenopia contains two regions: Northern Aenopia, situated in West Yorkshire, and Southern Aenopia, situated in Shropshire and Derbyshire. The nobility attached to regions are known as Presidents. They have little power over their regions other than the ability to appoint the Governors of the provinces within the region. They also appoint councilors to the region's council. This has a larger amount of autonomy than the President, however, does not have more autonomy than the Emperor himself.

Colonies are autonomous, inhabited areas of land outside the country of Aenopia. Currently, there are no colonies outside of Aenopia, however Aenopian Plushunia is a Plushunian Crown Dependency which is located between the cities of White and Sough within the territory of Aenopian Calver.[21]

As a direct response to some nations in the Micronational Community's involvement in Micronational Affairs and claiming to 'Declare war' on other nations, the Empire of Aenopia vows to 'retain Peace and promises not to initiate conflicts with any recognised, Sovereign states unless the Sovereignty of the Empire is violated.' [22] Because of this, Aenopia does not have a significant military, however, that is mostly compensated by the active development of an air force. Logan I said that 'There is no point in a standing military when most of your claims are spread across Britain and you're supposed to be a peaceful nation. Having a standing Military will only agitate nearby states.' Aenopia does, however, have a Reserve Army, for which all healthy male citizens (This mostly being residents) are automatically drafted into a reserve Army as part of the Constitution.

The Aenopian Navy does have a Destroyer-Class Vessel (TES Conqueror) under construction, however, delivery is delayed for undisclosed reasons. This is scheduled to be delivered in 2020. Currently, 2 Devastator class warships are being built by Marco with a planned delivery date of early 2020.[23] These will be nearly identical to ease service and will be Aenopian Teme - compliant for a potential future Canal through the territory.

Aenopia is an absolute monarchy, with full power being granted to the Crown. This negates the requirements for a Parliamentary system, MPs and Political parties despite the presence of the Aenopian Independence Party (AIP). Control of the nation is as a result, hereditary.

HRH Emperor Logan I is the head of the state as the Monarch and holds all executive, legislative, and judicial powers. He can not be held responsible to any members of the government as it is an Absolute monarchy, under his ruling. The Monarch has the absolute power to create and dissolve a Parliament at will, this can be implemented if the Crown requires support during a period of time.

Due to Aenopia's Governmental situation, there is only 1 Political party as a result. Aenopian Independence Party (AIP for short) was formed in July 2019 following Aenopia's subsequent Dominionship with the Empire of Emosia. AIP advocated for Aenopian Independence following this annexation, for which resulted in Independence 1 month later. The party wasn't dissolved, however, and instead advocates for a Parliament and an end to the Absolute Monarchy.

Aenopia's primary currency is the British pound sterling (symbol: £). This allows for the ease of trade between other British micronations and also serves as a temporary measure until an Aenopian currency (currently under development) can enter circulation. This will be partially phased out in 2020 following the introduction of the Starling, however, will be retained for external trading.

The nation does have its own exclusive currency under development, however. The Starling (symbol: S£) will be used to trade for Aenopian goods only, such as postage stamps. S£1 will be traded at New Aberdare Postal Office for £0.53 in order to purchase certain goods which will be only tradeable with Starlings. Test printing of the first articles is hoped for February 2020, with initial circulation beginning in mid-2020. Full circulation is planned by 2021 when internal trading with the Pound Sterling will partially cease.

Imports and Exports

An example of a Macronational wind turbine. A hugely downsized version roughly 1m tall is planned to be built in Greater New Aberdare

Despite not exporting any produce, the Aenopian economy is split into 3 categories as commonly used by Macronational economies across the world: Primary (farming), secondary (Aircraft and Ship production) and tertiary (services such as AenopiAir). As part of this, Aenopia produces consumables (such as fruit and vegetables) and Transportation systems (Aircraft, ships and railway locomotives/rolling stock) on behalf of New Aberdare Construction Ltd. Greater New Aberdare is the economic center of Aenopia, with 100% of Aenopian products being produced within the Capital. On the other hand, tertiary services can be found within Aenopia such as law firms (Röss & Co. Law Firm) and Airlines (AenopiAir) to name a few.

Aenopia currently imports all its requirements, such as consumables, electricity and other items. Plans for renewable sources of energy generation (primarily wind power) are being developed, with the intention to develop at least 8% of Greater New Aberdare's energy requirements by 2023. This plan is, however, still under development. This will see a wind turbine erected near the UK-Aenopia border for the territory, which will be used to provide a fraction of the power required for New Aberdare.

Media is produced within Aenopia, specifically within the territory of Greater New Aberdare. This is mainly in the form of a national Newspaper. The Aenopian Hour, a state-run Newspaper intended to keep the population and more importantly, the wider Micronational community alerted to anything happening within Aenopia, is produced by HRH Logan I himself weekly.[24]

Post Office

Aenopia has a small Postal Service which handles the shipping of letters and postcards within the territory of Greater New Aberdare and to other Micronations. The Postal Service is also responsible for producing Aenopian Postage stamps which can be used within Aenopia and the only such registered stamps to be used on Internal shipping. Mail is handled at New Aberdare Post Office, where it is sorted and distributed to the right areas.

New Aberdare Post Office is also responsible for the legal distribution of Aenopian Starling, for which £0.53 can be exchanged for S£1, which can be traded for Aenopian goods. This service is currently unavailable whilst the Starling is developed and enters into full circulation.[25].

2019/2020 series

The first series of the Aenopian Postal Service stamps was created on 14 December 2019 and was designed by HM Logan I, and test printed in New Aberdare the same day. This is the main series of stamps. These stamps follow the principle of having an image of a British train instead of usual stamps which feature a portrait of the ruler or a symbol of the nation. This comes from The Emperor's interest in Britain's railways, and Aenopia's connections to the railway.

2020 National Symbol Change series

The second series of the Aenopian Postal Service stamps was created on 15 February 2020 and was again designed by HRH Logan I in response to the change in National Symbols a few days beforehand. The Stamps feature the new National Symbols displayed on them or in the case of the National Anthem, a reference to the Symbol in question. These are set to enter into circulation soon.[26]

Countries recognized by Aenopia with no relations

Aenopia actively engages in formal and informal Diplomacy with other nations, for which are formally conducted by the Crown. The nation has signed formal documents with 10 other sovereign states, and recognizes the existence of 10 other nations, without the signing of Treaties to legally bind this.

Recognised states; no foreign relations

Aenopia recognizes the Sovereignty of these states, however, has not engaged in formal diplomacy. Recognition is also given to all members and observers of the now-defunct North Atlantic Defence Union. Recognition of these Sovereign states does not equate to diplomacy including the signing of formal documents.

Aenopian Involvement in Foreign Affairs and the Auvenum Crisis

The Empire of Aenopia does not engage in Foreign Conflicts due to a part of the Consitutuion stating that the 'Empire of Aenopia retain Peace and promises not to initiate conflicts with any recognised, Sovereign states unless the Sovereignty of the Empire is violated.'[42] This means that according to the Consitution, Aenopia must not initiate Conflicts with other nations else fear of violating the Consitution. As a result, Aenopia does not engage in Foreign affairs as a whole except with one case. On 7 July 2019 as part of a Peacekeeping mission, the OAM sent James Ellis of Emosia and HRH Logan I of the at the time Dominion of Aenopia to Auvenum following reports of the population rioting. [43] [44] However, attempts to bring peace were soon ceased following the unwillingness of the population to end the Riots so the two Ambassadors withdrew.

Roads and Motorways

Due to the lack of Railways and Airports within Aenopia, territories have to rely on pavements designated as roads for Transport. Currently, New Llandudno and Subsidiaries is the host of Aenopia's only Motorway, in the form of AM-01. At 65m (213ft) long, the road connects the UK-Aenopia Border Bridge to New Llandudno Junction and the Western border of the territory. It was opened on 21 January 2020 in a formal ceremony by HRH Logan I[45] (albeit with a non-existent crowd). Following this, SR-02 is scheduled to be commissioned, which will connect New Llandudno Square with the planned site of New Llandudno Joint Airfield.

There are plans in the future, however, to commission more roads within Aenopia, including a potential ring road around the territory of Aenopian Calver and connecting New Tenby to the border and providing a backbone for Bryniau Gwyrdd.

Railway Lines

Aenopia doesn't currently have any Railway lines, despite their large cultural significance. Aenopia did, however, have a high-speed line in the inhabited territory of New Aberdare which was scheduled to be opened in September 2019. The franchise to operate the service was won by Tollóuse: an Aenopian railway operator. It was expected that a new fleet of trains was to be introduced in 2020. However, in December 2019, it was announced that Government funding for the project would be cut following months of setbacks and delays.[46]The line was pulled up and the rolling stock was dismantled.

Aviation makes up a large part of the Aenopian economy, from aircraft development and construction to Airlines and Airports. Currently, there are no active Airfields in any territory of Aenopia, however there are plans to open one near to New Llandudno. New Llandudno Joint Airfield is a proposed Joint airfield which will consist of an Airport and Airforce base. Scheduled to open in Mid-2020, the Airstrip will provide Aenopia with its only Airport and Airforce base. The airfield is currently under development, with construction set to begin in Spring 2020.

The Airforce base will not receive any aircraft for service for safety reasons, resulting in the lack of servicing or even physical equipment. All aircraft will be serviced and stored at New Aberdare instead. Civilian aircraft registered under Aenopian law will allowed to fly to the Airport, however, all aircraft landing at the Airport will require a permit to land. The Flag Carrier of Aenopia is AenopiAir which is tasked with operating flights across Aenopia.

The Culture and Tourism Department is in charge of keeping statistics about the number of tourists that visit Aenopia each year. Locations of historical or cultural significance are listed as Protected areas, however the only Protected area right now is 'The den' outside of New Llandudno and next to New Llandudno Joint Airfield.

Popular locations

Aenopia follows the basic principles of Western Culture due to its geographical location in the world and subsequently, its population. Some Christian holidays which have become embedded into Western society (Christmas, Easter, ect.) are recognized by the population as National Holidays and as a result, celebrated. However, the Crown does not recognize these holidays as such, primarily due to their position as Religious holidays focusing on a certain event.

An example of French being utilised as the official Symbolic language in the Welcome to New Llandudno sign at the city's border.

English is the most commonly spoken language in Aenopia, known and used daily by the entirety of the population. English is the only language used for government business, although some Welsh is rarely used for more ceremonial occasions. The nation also accepts Welsh as a national language, however, it is unknown whether the population actually speaks Welsh.

French has been adopted as the Official Symbolic language of New Llandudno and Subsidiaries, and so as a result is utilised in signage amongst other things. It is not the official language of the Territory, however, due to an absence of French-speakers in Aenopia. An example of French being used within New Llandudno is the "Welcome to New Llandudno" road sign, for which the bilingual sign features both English and French on.

The logo for Aenopia's application for 2022 MOF Games

The National sport of Aenopia is recognised as Climbing, due to an interest of the sport being taken by multiple members of the population, including the HRH Logan I himself. Despite this fact, sports aren't commonly practiced in Aenopia by its population, namely the Emperor himself. Aenopia is a Member of the MOF and as a result, has applied to host the 2022 MOF Games.

Religion in Aenopia

Aenopia is a very Atheism-based nation, for most of the population, following said beliefs with 40% of the population following Atheistic beliefs. However, a small religion called Bobism is also accepted by a few members of the population. This follows Bob the late fish, for which during its life was known to have eaten rocks and had regular seizures. 3 other nations support this religion, with only 15% of the population following this religion. Aenopia does not foster any places of worship, mainly due to the impracticality of such and the state's large atheist population compared to other faiths.

The Emperor himself promotes the religion of Bartholemewism, a religion that he and his friends created in early October 2019, when he wrote the name 'Bartholemew' on a sheet in his Spanish book in an attempt to fool their teacher into thinking there was a student named Bartholemew within his class. It focuses solely on Bartholemew and his prophets, and believes that if you have a good life, you go to One-Stop once you die; If you sin then you go to Aldi once you die.

Dishes and Cuisines

The national dish of Aenopia, Chips and bolognese.

Food is an important part of Aenopia, mainly because of Greater New Aberdare's farm which regularly produces Potatoes, Cucumbers, and Tomatoes every year. National dishes are usually dishes that Emperor Logan I likes, such as the Cornish Pasty. The National Dish of Aenopia is Chips and Bolognese, however, the Cornish Pasty remains a staple food within Northern Aenopia. The National drink is also Coffee, which is regularly consumed within the Capital.

The products for which make up National Dishes are often not produced within Aenopia, with the exception of Potatoes which are regularly farmed, but used in the creation of National Dishes. The products, or in some cases even the entire dish, is often sourced from Macronational shops. For example, the Chips in the main National Dish are solely sourced from a local Chip Shop within the United Kingdom.
