Kingdom of Ebenthal
Ebenthal, officially the Kingdom of Ebenthal (Portuguese: Reino de Ebenthal), is an enclaved micronation located in South America, bordering Brazil, Roschfallen and Luna. At 6.5 square kilometers (2.5 square miles) and with over 150 people, the territory of Ebenthal is divided into enclaves within the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, in eight cities. The capital and most populated city is Gillisburgh. Portuguese is the national and one of the country's two official languages along with English. German is recognized as a minority language and, along with Spanish, has co-official status in two different federative units. The Ebenthali territory comprises several buildings and lands including farms, a lake and a river.

The vast majority of Ebenthal's modern-day territory was inhabited by numerous tribal nations before settlement by the Portuguese in the 16th century as part of their new colony of Brazil. Much of Ebenthal remained part of Portuguese Brazil until independence was achieved in 1822 with the creation of the Empire of Brazil, which later became a presidential republic in 1889 following a military coup d'état. It was also in the 19th century that German immigrants settled up in the hills of Rio de Janeiro on what would become part of Ebenthal. In 2014, the micronation Roschfallen was created proclaiming its independence from Brazil. Due to conflicts during its establishment, a group of breakaway nobles proclaimed the independence of Roschfallen's northern lands and, along with their own, founded Ebenthal. The Ebenthali Constitution was formulated based on its Roschfallenian project counterpart and the state was defined as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy, divided into six principalities and one free city.
Ebenthal's economy's calculation is based on the country's pyrite stock, with the value of GDP reaching 275.600 doubloons, and the GDP per capita reaching the value of 2.396 doubloons. As far as 2020 Ebenthal has a stable economy, mainly based on services, basic industry and exports of agricultural goods and livestock. Ebenthal is a South American regional power among micronations and a great power within the Brazilian sector and can be considered from a small to middle power in some global intermicronational affairs. Ebenthal joined the Union Against Micronational War in 2015 (withdrawing in 2017), the Micronational Economic Group in 2016 (withdrawing two months later), the former Liberal League, an international alliance that brings together nations with liberal policies, in 2014 (withdrawing in 2016), and the Micronational Monarchies Organization in 2015 (withdrawing in 2019). In 2020 Ebenthal became one of the MicroWiki nations, joined the League of Professional Nations (later reorganized into the League of Micronations), co-founded the Conference of Santiago and it was the very last applicant member to the Konmalehth. Citizenship can be acquired by online request and by living in one of its territories for more than a year.
The Royal Constitution defines the country's official name as 'Kingdom of Ebenthal' in Article 1.
Art. 1. The Kingdom of Ebenthal is the political association of all its citizens and their possessions. They form a free and independent nation which does not admit any bond that oppose its sovereignty.— Royal Constitution of Ebenthal
The country's proper name was inspired by the homonymous town in Carinthia, Austria. More precisely it is named for the early renaissance castle from which the town took its name, where Prince Luís Gastão of Brazil, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, lived during his exile. Prince Luís Gastão's life inspired former High King Arthur I after reading the book Dom Pedro II in Germany by the Prince's grand-nephew Prince Carlos Tasso of Saxe-Coburg and Braganza.
The name Ebenthal comes from the Slovenian Žrelec, meaning "stallion horse".
Before its creation, part of modern Ebenthal was integrated into the Kingdom of Roschfallen, a micronation founded independent from the Federative Republic of Brazil in 28 January 2014, comprising territories enclaved in three Brazilian cities; Ebenthali lands performed a quarter of the Roschfallenian lands in Rio de Janeiro and three quarters the lands in Petrópolis. After some months, Roschfallen was under constant organizational changes which led to a deep discussion of the country's government structure. The King Arthur I faced opposition on its administrative decisions, especially from Lord Arthur, Duke of Gallar, High Commissioner of Gros Morne, who gathered some supporters to make some changes. Dismissed, that same year on August 11th, the Duke of Gallar declared the independence of his portion of Gros Morne. He was followed by his supporters who proclaimed the independence of their portions of Avalon and Iriland Repartitions; the three parts fused and created the Kingdom of Ebenthal, whereas the Duke of Gallar was proclaimed High King Arthur I of Ebenthal. Upon its creation - as Gallar geographically changed to an enclave in Nova Friburgo, the kingdom's government sought to expand and acquired lands enclaved in the municipalities of Juiz de Fora, Belo Horizonte and Santa Luzia.
The country's constitution was granted by a constituent assembly composed of the High King and the nobility on October 8th, mainly based on July's constitutional project of Roschfallen which never came into effect. Among the changes, Ebenthal declared an aristocratic monarchy, where only nobles would have political power, and the monarch would be entitled High King. The micronation's initial structure was heavily influenced by the culture of many countries culture, for example formerly used terms as High King and Grand Vizier,[a] which comes respectively from Ireland and Ottoman Turkey, the flag symbol and lesser arms: the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha crest (in changed collors places) with the cross of Portuguese Military Order of Saint James of the Sword.
On 21 November 2014, the Conclave of Ebenthal - as the College of Peers was addressed - the country's unicameral and aristocratic parliament, was inaugurated and the micronation effective went on work. The appointed Grand Vizier Adriano Moreira began his work, naming his ten ministries. The Tribune of Truth was opened at December the 1st with Lord Pedro Reis, Count of Iustitia as its Seneschal.
With the structure stabilized and fully functioning by the end of 2014, the Ebenthali Government started to search for international recognition and settle diplomacy with other micronations. The first to recognize Ebenthal's independence from Roschfallen was the Duchy of Axvalley, through a treaty of mutual recognition signed on 2 January 2015. On the 28th of that same month, Roschfallen and Ebenthal signed the Treaty of Botafogo by which both recognized each other's independence, sovereignty and territorial claims, thus ending the Ebenthali Independence War. This happened at the birthday party of King Arthur I of Roschfallen, to which High King Arthur I of Ebenthal attended, thus marking the reconciliation between these two micronations. The first Ebenthali databases (i.e. forums and archives) were established.
Later in 2017, a plot by former First Lord Nilo Moreira, Count of the Hidden Mound to overthrow High King Arthur I was discovered. The Count was dismissed and banished from Ebenthal but this wasn't enough to stop him from trying, as he gathered a few supporters and received support from micronations such as the Nazi Arabic Empire, starting a civil war for political control. Eventually, Ebenthal counted on the support from the members of the former Liberal League such as Roschfallen, Schneeblutig, Harran and Rubrayev, and Arthur I was able to keep his crown while Count Nilo was sentenced to death if he ever set a foot again in Ebenthali territory, losing his citizenship and being permanently exiled to the Platine States Union.
After the Ebenthali Civil War, the micronation was left strengthened. Its population, counting both regular citizens and citizens-in-exercise, rose 32% in a year as its economy thrived with with increasing agricultural production in Belmonte, much thanks to the recently-arrived Bolivian immigrant workers, and the job offer and fulfilled demand manly in Arturia and New Switzerland. Immigration rates grew more than 60% with a wave of Brazilians related to the country's and its principalities' reigning families and a very few Swiss immigrants settling in the country. Still mostly isolationist, Ebenthal started to move away from its former sector NationStates-originated micronations as they became inactive, to a wider micronational scene.
Despite the Brazilian economic crisis having affected Ebenthal's thriving economy, it didn't prevent its growth. Nonetheless, an exodus of workers decreased the total population as many jobs had to be closed. Automation in place of manual labor also contributed to this. Responding to the situation, the Conclave voted to promote the expansion of the service sector with incentives and eventually a few jobs were created. As of 2019, the Ebenthali economy began a slow process of recovering from the economic crisis.
That same year, in June, High King Arthur I abdicated the throne to pursue academic studies outside of the country. He was immediately succeeded by his brother, High King Mateus I. His brief reign was rather chaotic, as he tried to bring in a series of unpopular changes within the nation. In conflict with the powerful Reis Dynasty of the Tribune of Truth's Seneschal Pedro Reis, Count of Iustitia and Peer Lord Nícollas Reis, Duke of Launceston, as well with most members of the Conclave, he tried to seize power by abusing his constitutional duties by dismissing each member of every single institution. To prevent not only this action but the possible dissolution of the nation, both the Conclave and Tribune of Truth ruled for the deposition of High King Mateus on 27 September 2019, ending the rule of the House of Beato. A regency was establish under the Duke of Sion and the government sought for a new monarch. The Ebenthali throne was offered first to former President Bryan of Rubrayev and later to Sultan Omar V of Harran. After both had declined, the throne was offered to King Arthur I of Roschfallen, who abdicated the Roschfallenian throne and accepted the offer to become the High King of Ebenthal.
Assuming the throne in late December 2019, Arthur II reorganized the nation with support of the conclave.[b] He changed the country's flag and coat of arms, as well as ordered a repagination of the currency. He appointed Nícollas Reis, considered a national hero for saving the nation, as First Lord of the Conclave[c] and the Reis Dynasty became the most prominent noble family in Ebenthal. High King Arthur II's personal lands which were previously integrated into Roschfallen, were annexed to Ebenthal, thus expanding its economy. The capital city of Arturia, as it was known by the time,[d] had its geographical borders altered, although yet enclaved within Rio de Janeiro. As of 2020, Ebenthal has achieved a broader aspect in terms of diplomacy under the influence and reign of King Arthur II, new classification patterns were adopted and a new government database was created. Ebenthal also became one of the founders of the Brazilian sector, adhering the joint political effort of the Treaty of Persenburg and the Protocol of Goetha, developed by Oscar I, Emperor-King of Karnia-Ruthenia, among others, to create a derivatist micronationalist sector in Brazil. To further the derivatist efforts, in April 2020 the country became a founding-member of the Conference of Santiago, an intermicronational political union (much like the Mercosur), by signing the Treaty of Santiago, which eventually led to the Santiago-Mansean Conflict. On 16 July 2020, the country joined the Konmalehth only to see it dissolved in two days.
Ebenthal's lands are located on the far western part of South America's Atlantic coast, at the Mantiqueira and Mar mountain range, enclaved in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Nova Friburgo, Saquarema, Magé, Itatiaia, Belo Horizonte, Santa Luzia and Juiz de Fora, close to the Tropic of Capricorn, where the shoreline is oriented east–west, and share land borders with Brazil, Roschfallen and Luna. It also encompasses several oceanic tiny islands, such as Bacaxá Rocks, Our Lady Rocks, and Jaconé Island. Its size, relief, climate, and natural resources make Ebenthal geographically simple, with Atlantic forests and a Subtropical climate.
With a total area of 6.5 square kilometres, Ebenthal spans only one time zone, the UTC−3, and the summer time zone UTC−2. Ebenthali topography is diverse and includes hills, mountains, plains, highlands, and scrublands. Much of the terrain lies above 600 metres and 900 metres. The northern and central region of the country is rugged, encompassing two mountain ranges with heights reaching over 2000 metres, while its southern region is coastal. Ebenthal is supplied by two rivers and is bathed by an immense lagoon of salt water and by the sea.
The climate of Ebenthal experiences a variety of weather conditions across a scattered area and varied topography, but most of the country is subtropical climate, while the southern region has a tropical savanna climate. According to the Köppen system, Ebenthal hosts three major climatic subtypes: tropical, oceanic and subtropical. The different climatic conditions produce environments ranging from tropical rainforests in the southern and central regions, subtropical vegetation, including temperate coniferous forests in the central and northern regions. Many regions have starkly different microclimates.
The country experiences hot, humid summers, and mild, wet winters. In inland areas of the capital city of Gillisburgh, temperatures above 40°C (104°F) are common during the summer, though rarely for long periods, while maximum temperatures above 27°C (81°F) can occur monthly. On the other hand, cities such as Belmonte have a much more temperate climate with an average of 28°C in summer and close to 0°C during winter. Along the coast, the breeze, blowing onshore and offshore, moderates the temperature. Because of its geographic situation, the country is often reached by cold fronts advancing from Antarctica, especially during autumn and winter, causing frequent weather changes. In summer there can be strong rains, which have on some occasions provoked catastrophic floods and landslides. The mountainous areas register greater rainfall since they constitute a barrier to the humid wind that comes from the Atlantic. Snow has occurred in the central region (Negromonte), although it is rare. Frost occurs normally during winters in both central and northern regions.
Government and politics
The Kingdom of Ebenthal is constitutionally defined as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy but often refers to itself as a kind of enlightened despotism. The monarch, titled as King, is both head of state and co-head of government of the nation and his position is theoretically hereditary but rather selective. The King appoints the Prime Minister, who acts as a co-head of government alongside the ministerial cabinet, government agencies and the parliament. Legislative power is exercised through the Konkrëse, the national bicameral legislature, consisting of the House of Aristocrats and the House of Councillors, under the sanction or vetoing of the King. Judicial authorities exercise jurisdictional duties almost exclusively through the Tribune of Truth. Ebenthal is a significant micronation according to Dresner's Categoric-Gradial System of Classification.
The Ebenthali federation is constitutionally indissoluble and rests on the common unity and respective autonomy of six principalities and the capital. The unity is set on five fundamental principles: sovereignty, citizenship, dignity of human beings, the social values of labour and freedom of enterprise, and political pluralism. The branches of government (executive, legislative and judiciary under a check and balance system) are formally established by the Constitution, slightly centralized into the King. The executive is organized independently in all three spheres of government, while the judiciary and the legislative are organized only at the national sphere.
All members of the upper house of the parliament, the House of Aristocrats, are directly appointed by the King, while members of the lower house, the House of Councillors, are elected through universal suffrage. The Truchsess are appointed after passing entry exams, while their head, the Seneschal, is freely appointed among them. Formerly an aristocracy, and now a mixed aristocratic-democratic system, Ebenthal conducted its first election on 8 March 2021. National politics is divided into three parties: the Moderate Party, the Conservative Party and the Worker's Party. The Social-Democratic Party went extinct when its last member retired in 2019, and the Republican Party was outlawed in 2019 as soon as King Arthur II took the throne.
Ebenthali law is based on Roman-Germanic traditions and civil law concepts prevail over common law practice. Most of Ebenthali law is codified, although non-codified statutes also represent a substantial part, playing a complementary role. Court decisions set out interpretive guidelines; however, they are seldom binding on other specific cases. Doctrinal works and the works of academic jurists have strong influence in law creation and law cases.
The Tribune of Truth serves primarily as the constitutional court of the nation. The legal system is based on the National Constitution, which was promulgated on 8 October 2014, and is the fundamental law of Ebenthal. All other legislation and court decisions must conform to its rules. The federative units have their own basic laws, which must not contradict the national constitution, as well "organic laws", which act in a similar way to constitutions. Legislative entities are the main source of statutes, although in certain matters judiciary and executive bodies may enact legal norms. Jurisdiction is administered by the judiciary entity, although in rare situations the National Constitution allows the Konkrëse to pass on legal judgments. There are also specialized military, labour, and political court officers who may act along with the supreme court in determined cases. The highest court is the Tribune of Truth.
From its foundation on 11 August 2014 until 8 March 2021, Ebenthal had an active Armed Forces, consiting of the Royal Army (including the Aviation Corps), the Royal Navy and the Cybernetics Corps as well as the Royal Gendarmerie, described as an ancillary force of the Army by the constitution. With the enactment of the Ebenthal's Bicameral Act, however, the country's military was formally abolished and replaced by the King's Reserve Force while the Cybernetics Corps were kept, both as separate entities under the Ministry of War.
The former Ebenthali Armed Forces played a key role in keeping the country away from coups d'état such as during the Ebenthali Civil War, defending its interests as in the Ebenthali-Brazilian War and protecting its borders as during the Ebenthali Independence War. Under the former arrangement, the Ministry of War unilaterally considered private security personnel hired by the country's rulers to secure their lands as members of the armed forces. This arrangement, often called a "private army", included two security companies serving Ebenthali citizens: the SEGMINAS and the CAMPSEG.[f] Nonetheless the country had its own active aware military personnel, although mostly served only nominally (reason why standing forces were abolished).
Substituting the Armed Forces, the Reserve Forces work similarly with rankings and offices, except it is only active when summoned by the monarch and it is mainly formed by civilians who take into military action. They also serve a cerimonial role, when requested. The Cybernetic Corps, however, remains a standing force as the country's first line of defense, since Ebenthal's main way of possibly suffering an attack, especially to which it can fight back, is virtually. Each Federative Unit is also free to set its own internal security system, as long as they can pay for it without the resources of the Federal Governemnt. Ever lacking its own corps, Ebenthal is served by the Brazilian Military Firefighters Corps.
Ebenthal is a federal aristocratic state composed of six principalities and one free city, which may be called federative units; each principality is an hereditary monarchy ruled by a Prince and is subdivided into several municipalities which are usually ruled by a Baron. Exceptions are the Principality of Belmonte where the principality is the sole city itself, therefore directly ruled by the Prince(ss), and the Royal City of Gillisburgh, national capital directly ruled by the King. As there is no national taxes, each federative unit is free to define and collect its own taxes according to the social-economic situation. The collected taxes are stored at the Bank of Ebenthal. Each federative unit is free to organize its own form of government at please and may or may not be served by its own legislatures. The Ebenthali territory is mostly composed (around of 70%) of private properties and lands belonging to King Arthur II's immediate family, while the rest is made up of private properties and lands of Prince Antônio I of New Switzerland's and Prince Hugo IV of Negromonte's families whose sovereignty was granted to the Ebenthali sovereign. Ebenthal is divided into:
|Capital||Other cities||Enclaved in||Citizens||Area (km2)||Official language(s)||Government||Ruler|
|GLB||Gillisburgh||None||Rio de Janeiro||Portuguese||Autocracy||King|
|BMT||Belmonte||None||Belo Horizonte||Portuguese||Parliamentary constitutional monarchy||Prince|

Ebenthal's international relations are based on Article 6th of the National Constitution, which establishes non-intervention, self-determination, international cooperation and coordenation and the peaceful settlement of conflicts as the guiding principles of Ebenthal's relationship with other micronations and multilateral organizations. According to the Constitution, the King has ultimate authority over foreign policy and is tasked with reviewing and considering all diplomatic nominations and international treaties, as well as legislation relating to Ebenthali foreign policy.
Ebenthali foreign policy is a by-product of the country's diverse position as a regional micronational power within the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. And thanks to its liberal citizenship policy. Ebenthal's foreign policy has generally been based on the principles of multilateralism, peaceful dispute settlement, and non-intervention in the affairs of other countries.
The first micronation to recognize Ebenthal's independence was the Duchy of Axvalley in January 2015. Roschfallen and Ebenthal signed the Treaty of Botafogo of mutual recognition as sovereign nations that same month. Currently, Ebenthal has established formal and informal relations with several micronations.
Ebenthal total economy budget is of Δ275,600 doubloons, relying on 27kg of pyrite, while its Gross Value Added, this means, the sum of all Ebenthali properties, is of R$5.182 million reais, about to US$2 million dollars. Ebenthal has a mixed economy and a developed internal market, on vias to develop a common market with the Conference of Santiago. The Ebenthali economy has been in a stable and controlled decline, as the country's treasure is steady and able to keep the micronation going at the current rhythm for at least 137 years, with the GDP per capita following on the same course, with numbers of Δ2,396 in 2020. Ebenthali industry provided large investments in productivity gains, in comparison to the last three years, which is attributable to the automatization of manual work and free market. Active mainly in the agricultural and service sectors, Ebenthal has an estimated labor force of over 75 people.
The country has been expanding its presence in intermicronational financial markets specially through the development of the Conference of Santiago Common Market. Major export products include consume goods, manufactural goods, information technology, textiles, services and decoration goods.
The Conferential Doubloon is the official currency, pegged to the pyrite standart (converted to Brazilian Real), following a managed-float monetary policy by the Conference of Santiago Financial Authority and implemented through the Bank of Ebenthal. Nonetheless, most of the country's business is done in Brazilian Real.[g] The economy of Ebenthal succeeded due to the free-market and liberal economic policies adopted by the government. The government intervenes in rare cases, to avoid prejudice to the national market. The laws of respect for the primary surplus has been respected since independence, although the country has gone through turbulent times until 2017 and again in late 2019.
The higher expenses of Ebenthali economy are with welfare and infrastructure, followed by security, health and the environment. Spending on government manutention are minimal. The Royal Government has invested heavily in modernizing its institutions and apparatuses in key areas of investment such as e-commerce. Total expenditures total roughly Δ7,000 doubloons annually.
Science and technology
Technological research in Ebenthal is officially carried out by the Royal Institute of Innovations, attached to the Ministry of Information and Propaganda, with the majority of funding for basic research and technological development coming from the profits of its investments in the financial market. Ebenthal's most esteemed technological hubs are the Royal Institute of Innovatios in Gillisburgh and the Pedro II Science Academy in Frumar. Owner of relative technological sophistication, the micronation has developed robots, automatic machines, medicines, as well as being involved in geological and agricultural research.
According to studies, 66% of the Ebenthali people is somewhat interested in sciences and new technologies, whereas 30% are more interested in astronomy; 79% are interested in information technology; 22% in military technology; 18% in biological technology; 52% in medicinal studies.
Ebenthal produces a considerable part of its energy consumed through solar panels, managed by Royal Light Company, a state agency of the Ministry of the Kingdom. According to research, the entire inhabited territory of Ebenthal has internet and telephone signals, and all of the Ebenthali families have at least one computer and a smartphone.
Ebenthali roads are the primary carriers of freight and passenger traffic. Around 30% of roads in Ebenthal mostly with cobble stones but also with asphalt, while the rest of the roads are primarily of dirt. Is it also estimated that 50% to 60% of the Ebenthali roads are accompanied by wood fences. The first investments in road infrastructure took place long before the micronation's independence. Ebenthali roads connect its cities with the neighbouring countries of Brazil and Roschfallen. There is no annual registration fee or road tax; however, all Ebenthali roads are privatized. The new car market is dominated by Fiat, (40% of cars sold in Ebenthal as of 2020), Toyota (30%) and Renault (30%). Over 70% of new cars sold in 2020 had diesel engines, far more than contained petrol or LPG engines.
Ebenthal isn't served by an own airport, but it has registered three helicopter landings, which prompted the government for the creation of the Princess Maria Heliport in the city of Sant'Anna.
Ebenthal also has a small river transportation network connecting the cities of Abyssi and Icarus, and to the Brazilian Rio de Janeiro state. The country does not have an own railway network, but Gillisburgh borders two Brazilian train stations whose lines connect the city to Triunphus in Roschfallen and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil; Belmonte borders one metro station well connecting the city to Belo Horizonte.
The Royal Constitution and the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education determine that the Royal Government must provide higher education, while each federativ unit must provide all the other stages. The Royal Government is responsible for the regulation of education through the Ministry of Culture and Education. Each of these public educational systems is responsible for its own maintenance, which manages funds as well as the mechanisms and funding sources. The constitution reserves 25% of the country's financial revenue for education. As Ebenthal isn't served by any educational institution other than the virtually-carried Royal Academy of General Knowledge, the education budget is mostly used to fund the education of the Ebenthali people in institutions outside the micronation.
The Royal Academy of General Knowledge is an state institution with a variety of courses in all levels of education, founded in Gillisburgh in 2014. As all the country's students have their studies funded outside Ebenthal, they frequent mainly universities in Brazil, among which the most frequented is the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, ranked 7th the best university in Latin America, according to QS World University Rankings.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Education, in 2018, the literacy rate of the population was 100.0%, erradicating illiteracy in the micronation; functional illiteracy, though, has reached 14.0% of the population.
Higher education starts with undergraduate or sequential courses, which may offer different options of specialization in academic or professional careers. Depending on the choice, students can improve their educational background with post-graduate studies or broad sense courses.
Attending an institution of higher education is required by Law of Guidelines and Bases of Education to be eligible to become a public servant. Kindergarten, elementary and high educations are required for all students, provided the student does not hold any disability, whether physical, mental, visual or hearing.
According to the Royal Constitution, its the State's responsibility to provide health and medical care in all levels to Ebenthali people, but as the micronation finds itself impossible to provide these services, in December 2014, the Ebenthali Government signed an unilateral agreement with Brazil to enjoy their public health system, the Universal Health System. On the other hand, private healthcare systems play a major role among the Ebenthalis, among which it is estimated that 65% have some type of health insurance. As the micronation does not hold any type of health institution, the constitution-designated budget for the area is used to fund health plans and emergency medical needs for the population.
Despite all the progress made since the adoption of this health system in 2014, there are still several public health problems in Ebenthal, which primarily leads most of the population to seek private health. The greatest cause of death in Ebenthal is due to heart diseases (2 deaths per 100 inhabitants). The number of deaths from non-communicable diseases, such as respiratory diseases (1 death per 100 inhabitants) and cancer (1 death per 100 inhabitants), also has a considerable impact on the health of the Ebenthali population. Finally, external but preventable factors such as violence and suicide caused no deaths in the country so far, although it left injured citizens. The Ebenthali-concerted Brazilian health system is one of the most well-developed among micronations, at the level of the World Health Organization (WHO) according to their 2000 pattern.
In 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ebenthali Government has promulgated a law which obliges all citizens resident in Ebenthal to be vaccinated as soon as any vaccines that have been approved by Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency are made available to them, under penalty of suspension of political rights, loss of nationality and even imprisonment (automatically commuted to banishment).
|Information taken from every year|
The population of Ebenthal, as recorded by the Ministry of the Kingdom in late 2020, was that of 169 people, of which 126 resided in national territory, 53 are citizens-in-exercise (this means people who actively sought to acquire Ebenthali citizenship, wether they live or not in Ebenthal, including 33 members of government). with a ratio of men to women of 6:10 and approximately 70% of the population defined as urban. The population is heavily concentrated in the Northern (43 inhabitants), Southern (30 inhabitants) and Central (26 inhabitants) regions, while the two most extensive regions, the North and the Central, which together make up 70% of the Ebenthali territory, have a total of only 69 inhabitants.
The first census in Ebenthal was carried out in 2015 and recorded a population of 42 inhabitants. From 2015 to 2020 the population more than doubled with the arrival of 49 Brazilians and 3 Portuguese and 3 Swiss. Ebenthali population increased significantly between 2019 and 2020 due to the mass exodus of Brazilian-Roschfallenians who followed their former King as he ascended to the Ebenthali throne. As the annual population growth rate has been positive and constant, life expectancy rose from 78 to 81 years and 83 years in 2019.
Race and ethnicity
According to the National Research by the Ministry of the Kingdom of 2015, 57.3% of the population described themselves as White; 38.4% as Mixed race; and 4.1% as Black of different ethnicities; There are no Asians or Ameridians in Ebenthal, although the DNA of most white and mixed-race people can be traced to some South American native tribe.
Since the arrival of the Portuguese in 1500, considerable miscegenation between local Amerindians and Europeans has taken place in all regions of the country (with European ancestry being dominant nationwide according to the vast majority of all autosomal studies undertaken covering the entire population, accounting for between 90% to 98%).
Ebenthali society is more markedly divided by social class lines, although some income disparity is found between race groups, so racism and classism can be conflated. Socially significant closeness to one racial group is taken in account more in the basis of appearance (phenotypes) rather than ancestry, to the extent that full siblings can pertain to different "racial" groups.
From the 19th century, Ebenthali territory had been to immigration. Hundreds of people from over 10 countries migrated to Roschfallenian-Ebenthali current territories between 1808 and 2016, most of them of Portuguese, German, Swiss, Roschfallenian, and Brazilian.
Ebenthal is religiously diverse, encompassing a wide range of beliefs and customs. The kingdom has no official religion, and the government is officially committed to religious secularism, although the monarchical institution did sustain a series of Christian practices and features. Freedom of religion in Ebenthal is a constitutionally protected right, allowing individuals to assemble and worship without limitation or interference. The practise of religion is now fully considered a private matter throughout society and the state. The majority of Ebenthalis though did consider religion to be important in their daily lives. According to the 2020 census, 58.6% of Ebenthalis identify as Catholics Christians. Much of the remainder is made up of Spiritists, who accounted for 23.1% of the population, divided into three sub-groups: Umbandists, Kardecists and Candomblecists. There is no Protestant denominations in Ebenthal, a rarity among many micronations. Secularization has been growing. In 2016, 9.1% declared no religious affiliation, compared to 14.8% in 2020. The remaining 3.4% are affiliated with non-Christian religions, the largest of which are Buddism (2.9%) and Satanism (0.5%).
After King Arthur II took the throne, he passed a law in the Conclave forbidding two Protestant groups to act in national territory, namely the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God and the Universal Church of God's Power. Several neo-charismatic features and their opposition to LGBT rights were interpreted as contradicting some constitutional guarantees and criminal laws, which the government used as justification for their action against these Protestant groups. Little internal criticism arose on the matter, although it did weaken the micronation's relations with some micronations ruled by evangelicals, especially in South America.
According to Article 13rd of the 2015 Constitution, ammended in October 2020, Ebenthal's two official languages are the Portuguese and English, whilst the Portuguese remains the national language, spoken natively by the entire resident population (65.1% of the total population), being the language used for business and administrative purposes, and the English plays its role as diplomatic language, mainly used in propaganda. Nonetheless the government provides information in both languages on its channels. In 2014 the former Conclave legally recognized the use of the Brazilian Sign Language as official language to deaf people by a regulated law. The law mandates the use of the Brazilian Sign Language, more commonly known by its Portuguese acronym LIBRAS, in education and government services when needed. The language should be taught as a part of the curriculum and language and language pathology curriculum. LIBRAS teachers, instructors and translators are recognized professionals. Schools and health services should provide access ("inclusion") to deaf people.
Brazilian Portuguese, spoken in Ebenthal, has had its own development, mostly similar to 16th-century Central and Southern dialects of European Portuguese (despite a very substantial number of Portuguese colonial settlers, and more recent immigrants, coming from Central Europe).
Minority languages are spoken throughout the nation. In some federative units, Portuguese is either the co-official language along with other major languages of foreign settlers, such as the German language, characterized by its national variant, the Katarinensisch, spoken natively by 11.8% of the Ebenthalis and disposing of a co-official status at the Principality of New Switzerland (where it is more spoken than Portuguese), or these languages can be recognized as minority languages, such is the case of the Spanish spoken by Bolivian workers at the Principality of Aldiva. Learning at least one second language (generally English and Spanish) is mandatory, while English is required to serve in the government.
The core culture of Ebenthal is derived from Portuguese culture, its sub-product, the Brazilian culture and features adopted from the German culture. Among other influences, the Portuguese introduced the Portuguese language, Roman Catholicism and Neoclassical architecture styles while its subproduct, though, the Brazilian culture, strongly influenced by African, indigenous and non-Portuguese European cultures and traditions, introduced these features. To complete the Ebenthali cultural development, the Germans and Swiss played a considerable role mainly in symbology, grocery and political structure. On the other hands, the indigenous Amerindians influenced not only the Brazilian Portuguese spoken in Ebenthal, as its cuisine, manners and legends, shared with the larger surrounding country, as well as the African influence, which goes beyond, to music, dance and religion.
Ebenthali art has developed since before the micronation's independence into different styles, mainly graphic and virtual art. Although Ebenthal does not hold any cinema, its people developed a complex audiovisual culture.
The architecture of Ebenthal is influenced by Europe, especially by Portugal and Germany. It has a history that goes back 500 years to the time when Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500. Neoclassical architecture is the predominant architetonic style in Ebenthal, an inheritance of the Portuguese settlers and the pro-European policy of the former Brazilian Empire, and it is the basis for all modern adaptation styles in the micronation. Other distinguisheable architectonics styles are the Gothic architecture, mainly in the central region at the principalities of New Switzerland and Negromonte. Modern architecture is on rise, specially in the form of adaptations to the classical styles, mainly in the country's two largest cities.
The music listened to in Ebenthal is mainly from Brazilian and American origin, while the produced music bases itself on these two influences, as well as on the African and British rhythms. According to a survey held in 2019, approximately 20% of the country's population has proficiency in some instrument, while only 1% have produced any original song. This same survey showed that Rock n' Roll and Metal together form 30.7% of the country's most listened to genres, followed by Brazilian popular music, Samba and Bossa Nova, listened to most by the other 29.5%; American popular music listened by 18.9%; and other genres completing other 15%, including Classical Music.
Ebenthal has hosted two rock bands, one amateur and one professional, and several shows and performances. Efeito Colateral is a heavy and thrash metal band from Rio de Janeiro and Gillisburgh who has toured the State of Rio de Janeiro and the central region of the Kingdom of Ebenthal. They have released an album so far and performed in three micronations on several events. According to the 2019 survey, 70% of the Ebenthali said music is somewhat important to their lives.
Many literary styles are appreciated by the Ebenthalis, from which fantasy, romance, thriller, romanticism, textbook, novel and cosmic horror are the more notorious. Works by Machado de Assis, H.P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, Tymothy Zahn, J. R. R. Tolkien, Fyodor Dostoevsky, José Murilo de Carvalho, are the most famous among the Ebenthali people.
These authors and genres have inspired several Ebenthalis to written by themselves, among which stands out Jean Roberto, with one published horror and fiction book and Prince Mário Sérgio Brum, author to three published book and several essays on Brazil's sociology and political history. Many others have written several books, mainly e-books, on subjects such as alternative history, fantasy, expanded literature of existing literary universes and famous brands such as that of Star Wars.
In 2018 the Royal Fair of Arturia, a literary and social event organized by the Clan Brum, took place in the capital city of Arturia (currently called Gillisburgh), where many citizens and foreigners came together to exchange and talk about several books of their preference. More than 20 people participated and the fair disposed of more than 60 books.
Currently, Ebenthal is served by several particular libraries and one public one, the Royal National Library, located at the Kings Palace. The government destinates 5% to 15% of its budget to cultural input annually, especially the acquisition of books.
Ebenthali cuisine varies greatly by region, reflecting the micronation's varying legacy of indigenous and immigrant populations. This has created a national cuisine marked by the preservation of regional differences. Examples are the Gororoba, a sweet ball made of chocolate and milk powder, considered the country's national dish; currywurst is the main regional dish in the enclaves of Nova Friburgo due to the German and Swiss colonization; Doce de leite and cheese bread are the regional dishes in the enclaves o Minas Gerais.
The national beverage is the chocolate milk and coffee. A typical meal consists mostly of rice and beans with beef, french fries and a fried egg. Popular snacks are pastel (a fried pastry); coxinha (a variation of chicken croquete). Ebenthal's cuisine is mainly centered in candies, specially made of chocolate, so the micronation dispose of many desserts such as brigadeiros (chocolate fudge balls), rocambole (roll cake) and romeu e julieta (cheese with goiabada).
The most popular sport in Ebenthal is football. The micronation created its football team in late 2018, but it has been dormant following two games. Volleyball, basketball, auto racing, and martial arts also attract large Ebenthali audiences. According to a 2019 survey, around 10% of the micronation's population practice some type of martial arts, mainly karate, Jiu-Jitsu and Capoeira.
The micronation is also a powerhouse of Paralympic Games as it is home to the world record holder and multiple-times swim champion André Brasil, who is a 1st-cousin-once-removed and godfather to High King Arthur II and a Ebenthali national.
