The Duchy of Edmount is the only duchy currently organized as a political subdivision of the Kingdom of Überstadt. It is named after Edmount Island, the island within Lake Ballinger, Washington that constituted the original territory of Überstadt, and now includes the campus of Mountlake Terrace High School and the Royal Family's residential property. HRH Prince Aaron is the Duke of Edmount.

History

The territory that is now the Duchy of Edmount was heavily forested during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as part of the Oregon Territory, and later the American state of Washington. The city of Mountlake Terrace was built on its current site as the primary economic activity of the area shifted from forestry to small-scale agriculture. When Überstadt was formed in 2010, the island in the center of Lake Ballinger, the city's main body of water, was claimed under the new constitution. The island and a portion of the surrounding waters were named the Edmount District, to which Mountlake Terrace High School was later added. After the revolt against Chief Judge Daniel Radcliffe and the organization of the Kingdom, the territory was renamed the Duchy of Edmount. The duchy was expanded for the second time in February 2013, with the addition of the Royal Residency.

The Duchy of Edmount is divided into three baronies. The first of these is the Barony of Ballinger, which includes the original territorial claims of Überstadt. The only land in Ballinger is three-acre Edmount Island, a peat island upon which a scattering of trees and dense underbrush grow. The portion of Lake Ballinger that falls within this barony is the only nautical territory claimed by Überstadt. Because of Ballinger's low elevation and presence of water, it is typically the coldest part of the country. Discussions are underway to make the island into a national park.

The second and largest barony, which covers most of Überstadt's territory, is the Barony of Terrace, a mile and a half northeast of the lake. Terrace consists of the campus of Mountlake Terrace High School. Hawk City, the largest city, is located roughly in the center of the barony. Running through the entirety of this enclave is the McAleer Highway, the main route for travel between Hawk City and the United States. Terrace is covered by vast plains of grass, AstroTurf, and asphalt. The border areas are lightly wooded by assorted trees and tall shrubs. The western border of Terrace is poorly defined due to the lack of a proper survey by the government. Accordingly, a rough borderland exists along this stretch rather than an actual border. The Baron of Terrace is Lord Alex.

The third and smallest barony is the Barony of Rosewood. Rosewood incorporates the Royal Residency and the property upon which it is situated. It is lightly wooded and acts as the national capital, with the seat of government being located in the Residency. The Baroness of Rosewood is King Mother Kara.

Government

Because Überstadt is a unitary state, Edmount is under the jurisdiction of the national government based in Hawk City. No rights are delegated to local Überstadtis, although the American-operated school in the duchy enforces its own rules regarding orderly behavior and the Royal Family has the right to manage their own property. As a duchy, however, Edmount possesses a ceremonial leader in the form of a duke or duchess. The Duke of Edmount is currently the king's brother, Prince Aaron.
