Caudonia, officially the Principality of Caudonia is a micronation claiming to be a sovereign state located in North America, currently consisting of properties in Boardman, Ohio, Canfield, Ohio, Massillon, Ohio, and North Canton, Ohio, thus making it an enclave of the United States.

Caudonia is a parliamentary semi-constitutional monarchy based off Liechtenstein. The nation is currently reigned by Prince William I, who has reigned since the nation's foundation. The nation falls under classification 6 on the Boodlesmythe-Tallini Classification, making it a 6th world nation.

Etymology

The name is derived from the Latin word for "tail." Tail in this context refers to Lake Erie, which was named by the Erie people, an indigenous tribe who lived along its southern shore. The tribal name "erie" is a shortened form of the Iroquoian word erielhonan, meaning "long tail".

History

Although the Principality of Caudonia was technically established on the 5th of July 2019, the 2nd of December 2018 is considered the founding date as it was the founding date of Vryland, the nation's first predecessor. This is because Caudonia was secretly established by Prince William I on that date, following the creation of Vryland. He was worried that Vryland may someday collapse, so he decided to create a small and at the time, unnamed nation for eventual use in the future. Following the dissolution of New Albion, Vryland's successor state, the Prince initially decided he would take a break from the micronational community or even leave it, but advisors convinced him otherwise. His idea of a future nation came true when he established Caudonia on the 5th of July.

Government and politics

Caudonia operates under the system of a parliamentary semi-constitutional monarchy, based off that of Liechtenstein. It has a form of mixed constitution in which political power is shared by the monarch and a democratically elected parliament. There is a multi-party system and a form of representative democracy in which the prime minister and head of government is responsible to parliament. However, the Prince is head of state and exercises considerable political powers.

Geography and Climate

Geography

Caudonia is located in the Mahoning Valley on the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau in Northeast Ohio.

Territorial Claims

Caudonia currently claims four parcels of land:

  • A 1.81 hectare (4.47 acre) parcel of land in Massillon, Ohio known as Olbialand.
  • A 1.08 hectare (2.70 acre) parcel of land in Canfield, Ohio known as Parnia. Although it is not part of the mainland, it is administered as such due to its close proximity and low population.
  • A 0.51 hectare (1.26 acre) parcel of land in Canfield, Ohio known as Ludusia.
  • A 0.20 hectare (0.50 acre) parcel of land in North Canton, Ohio known as Bismarck.
  • A 0.12 hectare (0.30 acre) parcel of land in Boardman, Ohio known as the mainland, which is where the Royal Palace and central government are located.

The government is looking to purchase more land in order to gain some sort of genuine international recognition from macronations. Islands in Scotland, the Falkland Islands, Canada, Australia, the United States and Wales have all been deemed as potential candidates for expansion.

Climate

Caudonia lies within a Humid Continental (Dfb) climate zone under the Köppen climate classification system. Because of this, the nation shares a climate with much of the Midwest and Southern Canada. These climate zones are characterized by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot summers with high humidity and cold to severely cold winters. Precipitation is usually well distributed through the year.

Economy

The economy of Caudonia is currently undeveloped. A small agricultural sector exists, however it is not commercial.

Culture

A cup of traditional Caudonian builder's tea.

The culture of Caudonia is heavily based on that of anglophone countries, mainly the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

Cuisine

A piece of cornbread.

Caudonian cuisine has developed from various influences from around the world, most noteably the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. Popular dishes in Caudonia include fish and chips, Sunday roast, Yorkshire pudding, poutine, butter tarts, hamburgers, and cornbread.

Also popular in Caudonia is the national drink, tea. Tea is a prominent feature of Caudonian culture and society much like in the United Kingdom. In Caudonia, like the United Kingdom, the drinking of tea is widely varied so it is quite hard to generalise. While the most common method of serving tea is with milk, it is not uncommon to drink it black or with lemon, with sugar being a popular addition to any of the above. Strong tea, served in a mug with milk and sugar, is a popular combination known as builder's tea. Tea is often accompanied with sandwiches, scones, cake and/or biscuits, with a popular British custom being dunking the biscuit into the tea.

The British company Unilever has a virtual monopoly on the sale of tea in Caudonia through its PG Tips brand due to the fact that it is extremely popular and is the only tea brand sold in Caudonia.
