Libertas, officially the Republic of Libertas and also known locally as the Republic, was a small self-governing nation, generally classed as a micronation. It was the direct successor state of the Great Socialist Union of Adjikistan. Libertas was made up of sereval properties and a patch of woodland that declared extraterritoriality from the United Kingdom. Libertas was also featured in the Sheffield Star.[1]

History

The history of Libertas can be traced to the nation of Monovia, founded on 31 May 2011 by Harry Fitzpatrick, its original and only head of state - the Libertas insurgency also began on this date, in an attempt to depose his government. Monovia joined a nation called Utopia in late August 2011, and became known as Amir in early September. On 8 October, the region of Adjikistan conquered the rest of Amir and extended its authority over some surrounding British territory, founding the Great Socialist Union of Adjikistan.

On 20 October 2011, it was announced that negotiations between Adjikistan and the Empire of Austenasia were underway to establish Adjikistan as an autonomous province of the Empire. However, four days later, Adjikistan became an Austenasian Protectorate, ceding responsibility for its defence and foreign affairs to the Imperial government.

On 23 October, a movement arose claiming imperial status for the Great Socialist Union, and attempted to found an Empire of Adjikistan. Although the Adjikistani government briefly claimed the status of an empire, this was renounced on 9 November when the communist government regained control of the nation. In an attempt to calm political instability, the government of Adjikistan transformed the nation into the Republic of Libertas a mere nine days later, creating a democratic multi-party state. On 24 November a small group of former paramilitary members founded the "Libertas Free Army", which began to attack government officials but was swiftly defeated by Libertasian government forces. Eventually the emergency government was dissolved and Libertas became an official "state of the masses".

On 11 December 2011, Libertasian president Harry Fitzpatrick announced he had decided to claim some nearby British land, and that he would attempt to help out the local community. However, due to the worsening insurgency, Libertas renounced most of its claims later that month to exercise jurisdiction over two small regions only.

On 7 February 2012, Libertas once again expanded due to two new properties leaving the United Kingdom and joining Libertas, as well as the annexation of a local woodland. On 14 February, Libertas joined in political union with the Lurk Federation to form the NSSR.

Government and politics

The President-for-life of Libertas was Harry Fitzpatrick, although he claimed that it was his citizens who appointed him to this post due to his work in developing the nation. The Prime Minister was Oliver Milnes, and regular parliamentary elections resulted in the left-wing ruling party being continually re-elected.

Military

As a protectorate of the Empire of Austenasia, the Austenasian Ministry of Defence held responsibility for the defence of Libertas, and notably gave much strategic advice and diplomatic support to the Libertasian government to help it deal with the Libertas insurgency. Libertas had a navy despite being landlocked, which was used for foreign expeditions. Libertas also had a police squad for inland law enforcement, and an army used for defence.

Geography

Libertas was based inside the British city of Sheffield. The Republic consisted of five cities: four properties and a section of woodland. Situated in a rather mountainous area, each property's owner gave their property to Libertas, with the exception of Terra Nova. Libertas also contained one dependent territory, the Libertas Antarctic Territory. Under Libertasian law, these territories were almost completely independent in terms of governance. They were allowed to have their own currency, armed forces, and even parliament, with Libertas maintaining ultimate sovereignty over the region.

Cities of Libertas

Name Picture Established Representative Residents Facts
Greater Libertas 11 December 2011 Harry Fitzpatrick 5 The capital city, Greater Libertas was a detached house with several small landmarks. These included the Enchanted Forest (a small section of woodland), the Greater Libertas Conference Room (used for official meetings) and Secession Square (a large stone plaza). Greater Libertas contained the residence of Harry Fitzpatrick.
Lesser Libertas 11 December 2011 Sandra P. 1 Lesser Libertas was a small apartment, home to a relative of Harry Fitzpatrick. A tasteful and modern abode, many Libertasians liked to go on trips here, either for the day or overnight. Additional accommodation and a small café were also provided for citizens.
Milnestown 23 January 2012 Oliver Milnes 4 This was a medium-sized house, home to Prime Minister Milnes. It was previously a part of the original Monovia, with claims to the property being dropped with its collapse. Milnestown consisted of a modern building, with a pond and shed in the garden.
Terra Nova 7 February 2012 None 0 Terra Nova was a large forested region, by far the largest city of Libertas. It was a stronghold for the Monovish government. As a gift, a small selection of land was given to Domanglia. This region became known as Fitzpatrickstein; however, after the Domanglian Empire collapsed Fitzpatrickstein once again became a part of the United Kingdom. All claims to the surrounding region were also withdrawn, but on 7 February 2012, Libertas took back control of the region. The region was a nature reserve.
Utopia 7 February 2012 Mark P. 3 Utopia consisted of a modern house, the residence of a relative of Harry Fitzpatrick. As a young child the President loved visiting Utopia, and it soon became one of his favourite places. It was a part of Adjikistan, though claims to it were dropped after Adjikistan became Libertas. It was re-claimed on 7 February 2012. It featured a nice garden and patio, including a pond with a gate to provide access to it.
Johnstown 7 February 2012 John P. 3 Johnstown is a house belonging to a relative of Harry Fitzpatrick, relatively close to Greater Libertas and annexed on 7 February 2012. Citizens of other regions often visited this region, as its people were renowned for their hospitality and knowledge of other cultures.

Economy

Libertas had a small economy and used the Libertas dollar as its currency, although the British pound sterling was used in daily life. All formally employed people work in the neighbouring United Kingdom. Plans to mint coins did not come to fruition.

Culture

Due to the position of the three outposts in the north of Great Britain, there was a small trace of Nordic culture in Libertas. There was also a sizable Irish community in Libertas, mostly made up of immigrants from Ireland to the United Kingdom. The national dish of Libertas was a fajita, and the national animal was the bear, representing courage and freedom. The national bird was the Robin, often spotted in Libertas.

Foreign affairs

Libertas maintained diplomatic relations with the following:

Libertas was also an observer member of the Antarctic Micronational Union.
